Rainy Day Fashion: Famous Wearers of Aquascutum
Another British brand bit the dust this year, here are some of the names and faces that made Aquascutum famous over the years, a brand that would be perfect on a miserable day like this one...
The sad news was announced today, that British tailoring brand Aquascutum is to go into administration.
Started in 1851, by Mayfair tailor John Emary, the brand went on to be the outfitter of choice for everyone from Cary Grant and Edward VII to the officers in the Crimean War. A family brand, up untill 1990, Aquascutum has represented the very highest quality in tailoring and will be sorely missed if efforts to save it are unsuccessful.
The Aquascutum waterproof mac, one of the first of its kind, went on to become an iconic wardrobe staple and a firm favourite of the rich and famous. Whilst the brand has expanded in recent years, and attempted to broaden its appeal, the form and functionality of its key garments are what helped it remain a force, and it should be remembered as such.
Aquascutum is a brand that still produce their clothes in Britain, an all too rare occurence these days, and along with the reported 250 jobs that will be lost, a sense of heritage and history will go as well. The brand that dressed Hepburn, Bogart and royalty may be no longer.

Intentionally.
Their stuff was fucking brilliant, one of the best British clothing brands ever. Piss poor management - if you can't make that brand work there is no hope.
After it became the choice of Neds in Scotland it ended up untouchable & unwearable. Sad to see it go but it was already gone for me
Johnny, that is because I am getting old and only wear the macs and suits now, with the label and check tucked discreetly away. When Hackett & Burberry faced a similar Chavalanche they just upped the prices and changed the marketing. Barbour take note.
Johnny, I think it's more a case of how you wear something than what it is you're actually wearing. I've got an aquascutum duffle coat and an old school burberry checked shirt (top button always done up), I still wear both with pride. Obviously there'll always be some clueless fucker labelling you a "chav", but it doesn't bother me, a lot of people are wise enough to distinguish between the two even if they don't know anything about fashion. I'm an ageing mod type, still into labels but can't afford as many as i'd like now on account of having two kids and a mortgage to pay. All you need is a smart hairstyle, snappy jeans and a nice pair of shoes/trainers, the rest you make up as you go along.....
In total agreement with you Steve..
Spot on Steve, as for Barbour going the same way - there classic stuff can't be whacked but they need to spot with the new nylon and bright jackets. Then again when there's profit to be made...
I can remember wearing a house check Aquascutum shirt under a Burberry golfing jacket in the mid-80's. I still have the golfer up the loft. I always preferred it to Burberry. Hopefully James Eden of Cooper And Stollbrand will succeed in his attempt to buy it. His Private White VC brand is a favourite of mine these days.
Good comments chaps, its the age old question isn't it? Style or fashion two different things in my book. Style is built up over a period of years, some folk just buy what is in fashion,.then up with a house full of crap.Classic looks never date just get tweaked a bit...
Still have a couple of plain Aquascutum jackets with discreet check, but alas too wee for me now,so going to sell them.In a rainy climate like Scotland,a top quality Aquascutum jacket was worth it's weight in gold.Barbour and Stone Island are another 2 good brands I wouldn't touch with a bargepole now sadly.Still plenty of good, original clobber out there if you take the time to look.
I vote with Steve-Well said!
