Wheel-Washed Denim Skatewear For Grown-Ups

Thought skater brands were all massive tees and sturdy pumps? Think again.
Ordinarily when you think about skater brands you think oversized T-shirts, clunky shoes and mischievous teens kicking around fountains in shopping centres. Rarely do you imagine a more tailored casual look, which is a shame because as brands like Analog are proving, it’s definitely out there.
Analogue are a skater brand with their sartorial heads held a little higher than most, offering a far more grown-up style of attire than most of their peers – although admittedly it remains to be seen whether their styling will be picked up by the wider skate community. Not that this should bother the majority.
Rather than the usual stonewashed denim procedure, Analog opt for a ‘wheel-wash’ process, giving the denim its worn, vintage look by essentially washing it in a tumble of skateboard wheels.
The pick of the bunch is their new range of denim jackets, in particular their Origin Jacket. Think slim-fit trucker style denim with fleece linings and Sherpa collars, perfect for when the summer that never appeared disappears in the erm, faded sun.
Perhaps most interesting about these items in particular is their unique wash process. Rather than the usual stonewashed denim procedure, Analog opt for a ‘wheel-wash’ process, giving the denim its worn, vintage look by essentially washing it in a tumble of skateboard wheels.
On first glance the quirky procedure might seem a little bit of a kooky fad, more of a ‘cool’ hipsterised stone wash than innovation but it does have merit. Instead of breaking down the fabric and synthetically ageing it, as with the traditional stonewash, the wheels act more as a softener, adding a smooth, cool hand feel to the denim. Making it a lot more comfortable whilst retaining that worn down look. If you are a retired skater you can at least rest easy in the knowledge that, whilst you might not look like you’re dressed for the half-pipe, your hallowed board has played a small part in making you look dapper.
Available in two wheel-washed colours, Dirty Khaki and Crosby Wheel, team with black jeans for a classic look or if you’re feeling brave and wanting to retain some Ricky Wilson Olympia, go for some proper double denim. Then find a fountain to stand next to and tell everyone you’re a skater. A cooler grown-up skater that can legally buy beer.

I reckon skate fashion, as ever, has moved on from the "oversized t-shirts and clunky trainers" you mention. That's skate fashion of 10 or 15 years ago, when we were one of the kids hanging around the shopping centre! That aside, these are really nice, bravo for bringing it to the attention of the masses!

Hmmm, I reckon there's a Greg P who happens to be European Marketing Manager for Analog, is that you, I am Greg P? I've got quite a lot of older Analog and some new stuff too. I love the older styles I have, some of the early pieces were righteous, but then the range has grown a lot since the early days. They still make some great pieces, but knowing the slightly older, discerning readers of Sabotage Times, I'd advise them to shy away from basic Analog pieces with large logos. Admittedly, not that many items, mainly a few tees and the odd hood, but best left to the aspiring skater kids in the park and sponsored athletes, unless you can actually skate with enough style to pull it off. Be a bit more selective and go for their quality denim, knits and wovens, all still perfectly skateable, but a bit more grown up, well made and with good attention to detail. In winter, the higher price outerwear has always served me well.
