Winter Clothing Wishlist

From jackets to shirts, shoes to knitwear and accessories that have taken my fancy recently, here's a peek at my winter clothing wish list.

Nicole Farhi Tweeded tuck stitch cardigan

If you’re like me, and I’m sorry if you are, then you’ll constantly be seeing clothes either online or in the real life shops that you’d love to own but just can’t justify splashing out on. If you’re also like me, then you’ll make a mental note of these items or even keep a list somewhere, so should they still be knocking about come sales time you might be able to get your hands on them at a knock down price. Now, here for you, dear Sabotage Times reader, is my list, pulled from both my desk drawer and my mind within my head, is my winter list.

Winter of course allows for an ace choice of clothing opportunities. Hats, gloves, big jackets, chunky knits, it’s a very exciting time. Some of these pieces I may buy, some I may already own by the time you’re reading this, and some may remain elusively out of touch. But all, I don’t care if you agree, look pretty good.

Gant long sleeved shirt

Gant’s shirts are great. Practical, well made, durable and ideal if you’re a fan of the preppy look. Without getting all Trinny and Susanna, the advantage of a shirt with a few colours on is you can match it with loas of different jumpers, jackets or trainers. I’ve got a few of these already but you can never have too many.

Clarks Rambler

Clarks Oberon

What can you say about Clarks? Classic shoes, comfy and they look good. These are reissues of their popular 70s walking shoes, with none of the fussiness of modern shoes. I really do need to grab either, if not both of these pairs soon.

Ma.Strum Sniper Torch Jacket

Ma.Strum seem to be carrying the torch the Massimo Osti lit and follow very much in the Stone Island (that’s well past its best) mould. Innovative, technical, all that carry on. Just a great looking jacket that combines the summer Torch Jacket – that I do own – and the Sniper jacket, into one great winter jacket.

Timberland Eurohiker

Great for walking the dog along the canal, rambling up to Top Withens or an away trip to the uncovered terrace at Stockport on a miserable January Tuesday night. The Timberland Eurohiker is a classic. Forget the current crop of fashion hiking boots, these are the real thing and less than half the price. Bloody comfy too.

Ma.Strum Defense Carbon Slub Military Parka

Yes, another Ma.Strum jacket. Probably the best looking one they’ve done but I’d be hard pressed to chose between this and the Sniper/Torch jacket given the choice.Everything I like about a winter jacket, and at the moment, at least, you’re not going to see many around.

DS Dundee Etttick Shooting Jacket

Something a bit different this. A highland check shooting jacket from DS Dundee. I love tweed and country looking stuff. I’ve a similar jacket in cord but would love to own this.

DS Dundee Rutherford Wax Jacket

My second DS Dundee pick on the wishlist. Waxed cotton, poacher’s pocket, ‘hand warmer’ pockets and a nifty detachable sheepskin collar. I really like the look of this. A bit of a twist on the traditional wax jacket.

Ralph Lauren Shawl cardigan

A winter warmer this. Ideal to go over the top of the Gant shirts. It’s not cheap but this Ralph Lauren cardigan is thick heavyweight wool, so  it’s not going to be.

Nigel Cabourn Everest Parka

This Nigel Cabourn parka has been all over the internet recently a) because at £1600 it bloody expensive, and b) because it looks the business. ‘A replica of the jacket created for Sir Edmund Hilary’s ascent of Mount Everest’ if I had a choice of any coat to own this winter, it would probably be this one. Matching crampons would be a bonus.

Barbour Utility Lambswool Cardigan

Bit of a cheaper option that the RL cardigan but with all the durability that comes with Barbour. OK, so Barbour jackets have been killed off in the last couple of years by the skinny jean types but the knitwear is still just as good.

Norrona Bobble hat

Norrona make  some of the best practical outerwear around. Proper outerwear, the kind of stuff Ray Mears wears to forage for edible tubers in some Scandinavian forest. I’ve got a few Norrona jackets and I’m a big fan of the bobble hat, therefore I want one of these.

Mulberry rabbit fur gloves

Fur is ace, don’t let anyone tell you otherwise. Mulberry’s soft leather, rabbit fur lined gloves are great for winter, keep your hands toasty and leave them feeling ‘rabbit soft.’

Nicole Farhi Tweeded Tuck stitch cardigan

Nicole Farhi makes some great stuff and I’ve got plenty of it. Great knits, jackets, polos, shirts. Not a lot of Farhi stuff I don’t like. This is something a bit different and I want it.

Tag Heuer Monaco watch

OK, it’s a watch, and it’s been aroud a long time, but it’s the one Steve McQueen wore in the 1970 film Le Mans, and is therefore cool. Been after one for years but spend most of my money on jackets and footwear instead, so maybe it’s time to take a break from them and invest in this?

Oliver Sweeney  Haskins ecru belt

Yet again another label, designer, call it what you will that I’m a big fan of. I’ve a few Oliver Sweeney bits and bats – wallet, belt, shoes – and they’re top class. No one does leather better in my opinion, and now I’d very much like this belt please Santa.

Noel Gallagher strikes again.

AT 8:12 am, 5-Nov-2010

Nice gear! Clarks Oberon are great, not least because most people are utterly bemused by them!

The Golfer 9:48 am, 5-Nov-2010

I agree with you GANT shirts are great but a bit short on material for the older gentleman

Hornet 12:12 pm, 5-Nov-2010

Ma.Strum jackets are very nice as are the Norrona hats.

Adam 1:31 pm, 5-Nov-2010

Just got a pair of Ramblers £56 ! BARGIN!

biff bifferson 2:44 pm, 5-Nov-2010

yes to the ma:strum ones (esp the parka) and the boots but that fahri thing is terrible. looks scratchy too. never had a gant shirt although they look decent.

Keith Wildman 3:11 pm, 5-Nov-2010

It's a bit of a crap photo of that Farhi cardigan I think. Try the Gant shirts, they're great.

oscar 5:12 pm, 5-Nov-2010

It would be a shame not to wish for a pair of Our Legacy cords to go with the belt, a Gant shirt and RL cardigan. The gloves have a little hint of Heinrich Himmler though. Sexy!

steven 11:02 pm, 5-Nov-2010

like the bobble hats!

ianbrownshairdo 9:12 am, 6-Nov-2010

i have a small newborn child i would be willing to trade forthe Ma.strum defense parka.shes a good kid. dosent cry.

jugoya 10:52 am, 6-Nov-2010

Holy shit, Wildman strikes again. I do not know where to begin, every item is a gem. Ok, 'choice cuts'. I have to kick off with and I quote the "Barbour 'utility' Cardigan." ha ha ha, utility, ha ha ha Cardigan, in the same sentence with no irony, for real? Parka jackets, had one when I was ten. I had one when I was ten because my mum dressed me and I had no choice. I've not looked back since. Clark's (again, we wore them to school, cos we weren't paying and we had no choice) Rambler's; because pulling a multitude of women is easy that you need to repel them with these. Do you hae one foot shorter than the other, thus these correct it Keith? Nicole Fahri tweeded.... Since when was wearing a 70's carpet consider cool. Don't tell me "oh but it's Fahri, so it is cool." designer brands were invented for those with too much money and no taste, thus justifying their poor choices "yeah I know I'm wearing nothing but I'm told it's Prada." Bobble hats, again, are you regressing? You're in your 30'snit in kindergarten. Do they produce matching 'booties'? The Gant shirts. Well you can see why i don't like them. The Rutherford wax jacket is ok, still ugly though. I think what annoys me is that most if these are designer labels yet you can get just as good quality and tailorin for far less. You just can't use the crutc that is the designer name to justify a poor purchase. This is not fashion, it's consumerism; you'll be buying more of this shit next season because it has no style.

The Fat Bloke 8:00 pm, 6-Nov-2010

Good article Keith, cracking gear. Interesting to see the folk disagreeing with you never offer an alternative do they?

ffr 12:04 pm, 7-Nov-2010

TFB has summed it up. I'm liking that Barbour Cardigan, might take a trip to the Barbour shop tomorrow to try it on. Not keen on them Cabourn parkas though, expensive for expensive's sake.

Danpiesley 3:24 pm, 7-Nov-2010

Any UK stockists for the bobble hat?

The Fat Bloke 3:42 pm, 7-Nov-2010

I think what gets me most is that Jugoya thinks Barbour, Timberland & Norrona re 'designer' brands, not proper outdoor gear. Thus proving his knowledge is zero & his opinion counts for nothing.

Keith Wildman 5:06 pm, 7-Nov-2010

Not that I know of Dan, though you could try Tamarack Outdoors on the interweb. TFB, I was going to point that out too but couldn't be arsed.

Llywarch 7:48 pm, 7-Nov-2010

The Nicole Fahri cardi is a thing of beauty! Not a big fan of Gant, but all the other items, I would certainly wear. jugoya, nowt wrong with a little creative banter, but really, you're not funny. I couldn't even muster up a slight chuckle. Give up the comedy and go and find something you might be good at. Astronomy maybe? Studying full moons and the like?

Duncan 8:30 pm, 7-Nov-2010

"What can you say about Clarks?" I can say that those look like correctional shoes, and correctional shoes are readily available from the NHS for free. So please don't go out and pay upwards of 70 notes for those horrors.

jonathan sim 8:40 pm, 7-Nov-2010

don't get ma strum myself, something a bit too euro space boy about it but the rest is great, although like you say the timberlands are for walking the dog only, prefer the italian jobs on oi polloi, forget the name of them.

jugoya 10:13 pm, 7-Nov-2010

Well, they're not designer, they're brands, which you pay more to say "oh yeah, it's Barbour." if that's your bag then piss your money against the wall with overpriced off the peg shit that can stroke your ego and slightly raise your libido. The main point I was making is that this shrieks tasteless. All those I showed this pitiful article agreed. Oh and I note that the main sticking point is my use of 'fashion' and 'designer' rather than 'brand'. Amusing then that there's been silence regarding the items in question. Oh and fat bloke, I'd make suggestions (and have done so) but you can't educate pork and to be frank it would require an article. I can't be arsed, I only have time to write such long diatribes of bile because I'm incarcerated on public transport for long periods. I therefore have to dwell on how angry this shit being considered aspirational makes me.

jugoya 10:19 pm, 7-Nov-2010

Oh TFB, having re-read my initial comment, I was referring to Fahri specifically and further still stated 'most' when referring to 'designer'. Not lumping them all together. Some, quite clearly do nit fall under the banner of designer, or as alluded to, taste.

Keith Wildman 11:28 pm, 7-Nov-2010

"How's your day been love?" "Oh, not bad, I got angry at some pictures of jackets on the internet again."

Chocolate The Owl 11:23 am, 8-Nov-2010

Love the Farhi cardigan, reminds me of two similar cardigans I owned in the early 90s. Had comments that they resembled carpet underlay, but I adored them nonetheless. Worn year after year until they were unwearable. I never saw anyone in the same cardigans (always a bonus) they were comfotable and practical much like clarks shoes. Enjoyed the wishlist, I imagine it's difficult being a man having the staple trouser, shirt, cardigan or jumper combination to choose from day in day out.

nifty 50 12:47 pm, 8-Nov-2010

Keith if i was you i would start to worry this girl jugoya is very strange havin read most of her comments on this and your other write ups she must be an ex girlfriend who hate's you or who's still in love with you i mean how angry can someone get other nothing.

Keith Wildman 1:56 pm, 8-Nov-2010

Don't worry nifty, I've taken to doing a full sweep of the bushes in a morning and an evening outside my house... just in case. Oh, hang on, there's someone at the door...

falik 6:21 pm, 9-Nov-2010

Gant? Are you fkn kidding me? And those parkas are taking the 80's revival a little too literally. What's up next? Shell suits and pebble-dashed jeans? If you want to look like a 12 year old football supporter on a school day trip, that's fine by me but don't try and sell this image to grown men (Fahri cardi's nice tho).

strawbridge 12:21 pm, 15-Nov-2010

Why am I seeing so many folk wandering around with their trousers tucked into or rolled above their boots this year?

The Waltzer 1:16 pm, 15-Nov-2010

Hmm, normally like Mr Keith's suggestions but this is all a bit rank. Pop onto the Oi Polloi or Albam sites and that should sort you for winter. Or get a woolrich artic parka and some redwings. job done

stelmo 9:07 pm, 16-Nov-2010

Don't waste your hard earned on any of the Ma:Strum. I spend most of my workday sending this faulty garbage back to the warehouse and filling out the paperwork.

Miserable cunt 12:07 am, 26-Nov-2010

"Fur is ace". Fuck off, Wildman.

alonelychicken 4:46 am, 26-Nov-2010

DS Dundee Etttick Jacket pick of the bunch for me,but how much wear would you get out of it though....but on the other hand it'll last for yonks, however long a yonk is??

Johnny L 12:34 am, 28-Nov-2010

You're taking the piss right?

K Wood 4:12 pm, 20-Dec-2010

worryingly too many cardigans though did not know the Clarkes Cornish Pasties had been reissued - had a pair of those Timbeland boots for 10 years - still good even though they hum a bit

Johnny Two R's 5:31 pm, 21-Dec-2010

I like the boots, but I don't have a dog. Would they be cool walking the kids to the pub? ;)

Keith Wildman 5:36 pm, 21-Dec-2010

Yes, don't forget a couple of leads and bowls of water so you can tether them outside though.

Mattlehat 10:22 pm, 21-Dec-2010

Like the boots, just ordered some off their website. Shirts look smart too. Not sure about the Clark though.

The Golfer 1:04 pm, 22-Dec-2010

nice one Keith

Adam 5:15 pm, 22-Dec-2010

I think I'll have to throw the Clark's in the bin now I see others dont agree with my taste! I should be more concerned with what what others opinions may be the next time I purchase something , afterall , I only by anything to appease others. Err........ How does Bollocks sound Hmmm ? I wear what I like and I like what I wear. Keith, how the devil will you sleep tonight???

Keith Wildman 5:56 pm, 22-Dec-2010

Keith, how the devil will you sleep tonight??? On a big bed with the many beautiful ladies who admire my Clarks shoes.

The Golfer 10:15 am, 23-Dec-2010

and I know Keith is not kidding

OLIVER O'DRISCOLL 9:29 pm, 25-Dec-2010

@Keith Wildman "How's your day been love?" "Oh, not bad, I got angry at some pictures of jackets on the internet again." Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha! A reminder to me that wit is mightier than the (unfunny) pen & sword.

Bobble Hat Bob 1:01 am, 5-Jan-2011

Not bad picks at all, but its all a bit fucking boring isn't it. you could have chosen the same pieces by different brands and designers 25 years ago. heritage ... yeah !

Love the DS Dundee Etttick Shooting Jacket and I want to make it mine but I can't see the bloody thing on their website !

angsta 11:48 pm, 23-Nov-2011

I like the hats and the clarks but i'm sure Nicole Fahri has better shit than that coming out this season...

Peter 11:36 am, 24-Nov-2011

Sorry, but the Clarks shoes look like you live with your 19 siblings in a one bed flat and the only shoes you can get are your dead Grandads from 1973.

Liam 6:38 pm, 24-Nov-2011

Anyone got a link for the Farhi cardigan?

cucumberfun 4:47 pm, 28-Nov-2011

Man, I totally get you Keith. I love the humour in this article it really cracks me up.

NNNNNNNNNNAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHGGGGG 4:02 pm, 1-Dec-2011

Clothes this season for men make it seem like all the buyers went to the same party and decided they were just going to buy the same things and put them in every store! There is no imagination.... if someone wants to be different from the crowd then don't go buying anything this season.

alan"ding"craigkilmarnock 5:36 pm, 4-Dec-2011

Love everything bar the Fahri cardi but I would crawl over broken glass to get my hands on that shooting jacket.Having just seen a recently purchased pair of Stan Smiths burst at the seams as seems to be the way with Adidas these days, I am drawn to the Clarks & can't see why they create such negativity.

Rider 1:56 am, 5-Dec-2011

I spent 230 quid on a thin cashmere poloneck once - my friend rolled around laughing at the price tag. I told her but its Nicole Farhi. A few years later holes threaten to pop any second - while cashmere I bought elsewhere at half the priceyears before it still looks new. Labels dont always mean quality....but I own 5 Barbour jackets of different sorts that are excellent quality. Sports and country wear brands are made to stand useage - fashion labels not really

Nnn 11:49 am, 5-Dec-2011

Depends on the item, and the make I guess plus how much wear things. Tbh, I've a Dolce and Gabana jumper which I've worn to death.... it's now begginging to show it's age and I'd love to find another one but alas I don't think I will be that lucky, however I've had about 10 years wear from it!

Steve 9:29 pm, 5-Dec-2011

I've still got a pair of Clarks Ramblers from the last time they were released (late 90s?) and they are still going strong. Fucking fantastic footwear and only a mong with no clue about footwear would say otherwise.

casualspotter 12:39 am, 9-Dec-2011

exactly the same article appeared last year - nowt caught your eye lately. Anyway agree on the shoes - got the Oberon's, Ramblers and the Eurohike's. Oberons must be my favourite ever. Would sell my granny for the Nigel Cabourn. Hats ? Sorry but it is the Casual Connoisseur Weir all the way.

JohnnyReaction 5:44 pm, 9-Dec-2011

I think cucumberfun might like to have some er... cucumberfun(?) with your botty

Rob Crampton 11:30 am, 12-Dec-2011

Interesting but those Clarks Ramblers and Oberon are horrible! I don't believe anyone with any taste would wear those things. They are for science teachers with beards!

wilson churchill 2:59 pm, 17-Dec-2011

the shoes on display are merely weetabix design rip orfs'.Now, the GlenHuskie brown suede cardigan, there's an icon of tomorrow.

superlog 9:51 am, 25-Dec-2011

Oh, does this make my ass look big? < use your mouth to get the rest of the good stuff out.

The Baron 7:12 pm, 27-Dec-2011

A square watch? I mean come on...Though given that KW's wrists a far too limp to support any watch, it becomes rather a moot point.

Michael Wild 5:38 am, 21-Feb-2012

Those Gant shirts.....And those Clarkes pasties....Then again we are reading fashion tips from a Bradford City fan, resident in Saltaire....

Michael Wild 5:40 am, 21-Feb-2012

The Tag is a quality instrument and a fine second time piece after an original Breitling Navitimer.....

McRam 12:01 pm, 9-Jan-2013

The cabourn Everest is pure quality. Yes it's expensive but I looked for 6 months and everything else just looked, well, a bit shit next to it. I just waited for the sale.

terry lindsay 9:54 am, 7-Apr-2013

The Tag watch is ugly, cant beat piaget polo ala steve martin in trains and planes.
