Kingston Hall channels colonial Jamaica in the early 1960s with all the hallmarks to suggest it will soon be a very popular place, in one of the best areas to have a night out in New York City.

If you find yourself in New York’s East Village there is an ace new bar to stop into. Kingston Hall channels colonial Jamaica in the early 1960’s with all the hallmarks to suggest it will soon be a very popular place, in one of the best areas to have a night out in New York City.

The bar has been meticulously designed throughout. It almost feels like stepping into a film set, where every little detail sets the scene from the artwork to the two blade fans to the stained glass windows. This is Ian Fleming’s James Bond territory; stylish, authentic and very cool.

Friendly unpretentious bartenders produce a load of inventive rum based cocktails. The James Bond inspiration can be found on the cocktail menu too by ordering a ‘Skyfall’ or a  ‘Pussy Galore’. There is even a cocktail you can have served in a coconut, which is advertised as “shaken, not stirred”. Kingston Hall isn’t purely rum based however, it offers a strong selection of draft craft ales too.

Jamie’s Dream School: The Finale

Kingston Hall has a food menu of Jamaican beef patties, Jerk chicken wings and other Jamaican inspired foods, an increasingly popular cuisine in New York since the success of Miss Lily’s on the edge of Soho. Though the food is better here.

Setting everything else aside as a bar it stands up by itself. The music is good, the pool table is the best you will find in the area and they knock out a decent pint of Guinness too. With a buy one, get one free happy hour until 8pm get a spot on the veranda overlooking 2nd Avenue and you will be very happy indeed.

Kingston Hall is on the second floor of 149 Second Avenue between 9th and 10th Street in New York.
