Arsenal’s first half (or first 20 minutes) against Napoli was some of the best football I’ve seen from Arsenal for years. Some people have claimed it was the best they’ve seen since the Invincibles. While the style might have been more reminiscent of them, I think the 07/08 team are being overlooked. Some of the football played by that team when we almost won the title, was nothing short of sublime. This performance however, had a level of maturity to it that they never exhibited. The boring nature of the second half was magnificent in its own way. This side in the back end of last season and so far this season have shown an ability to sit back and defend. In years gone past, the sight of Arsenal defending brought a wave of heart palpitations to even the most optimistic of fans. Whilst fans are far from assured these days, there’s certainly a feeling that the team is rightly confident in their ability to hold teams at bay.

We go into the game against West Brom on the back of a fine run of form. 10 consecutive wins in all competitions, and rapidly closing in on Chelsea’s record of 11 consecutive wins in the Premier League, things look rosy for the Gunners. The narrative mindlessly perpetuated by the media at the start of the season that the squad lacked depth and would falter given any sort of an injury crisis has been dispelled. They are starting to realise that this majestic run has been achieved with the absence of Cazorla, Podolski, Oxlade- Chamberlain and Walcott. That’s without our top goalscorer last season, Walcott, and arguably our best player in Cazorla. Pundits are clamouring to praise this side now and appear as though they never doubted them.

Arsenal face Dortmund twice, Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester United in the next five weeks. A run of games which will test this squad to the limits. While other Arsenal fans are doing their utmost to stay grounded, there’s every reason to believe this team can do well. Cazorla, Walcott and Podolski should be rejoining the squad soon after the international break in the midst of this tough run. The football played against Napoli was something that we’ve seen in small amounts throughout this run. Fulham away, Swansea and Napoli. I get the feeling that this team is still yet to hit top gear, managing to score early and kill of games, they’ve rarely been forced to really play at their best for 90 minutes. There is every reason to believe there is more to come from them. Having been deprived of the sight of Cazorla and Özil playing in tandem so far, I for one, cannot wait for his return to first team action. They will be a test for even the stingiest of defences. Playing upon the base of a resilient defence, this team has the belief that they can beat anyone. What’s more, teams are now starting to fear Arsenal again.

In my opinion, it’s vital that we beat West Brom and then recuperate over the international break on the back of another win. Many of the players are in need of a rest and it gives players like Cazorla and Walcott time to regain fitness. After this, with a fuller squad, we can deal with the upcoming run and hopefully maintain our position at the top of the table as well as the morale within the squad. If the biggest crisis the media can impose on us is Özil having a pizza and Jack “smoking”, I couldn’t care less!
