Chelsea are looking to plan for the future defensively and hope to start by beating Arsenal to Italian defender Giuseppe Scalera.
Scalera is an Italy u17 international who plays right back for Bari. Although the 17-year-old is yet to make an appearance in Serie A, he is very highly rated and a target for top European clubs.
According to the Metro, Arsenal have been tracking the player for a while, but Chelsea are thought to have overtaken their rivals in the race for the youngster.
Chelsea are planning to make a £2.5m bid for the young Italian and their willingness to pay high wages to young players will give them an edge over Arsenal.
Chelsea have developed a reputation for monopolising the European loan market as well as their youth teams currently being the best in England and Europe. Scalera will no doubt see the Premier League champions as an attractive destination.
