Brian Deane hit two goals in this match played in front of a 28,000 sell-out at Bramall Lane. Mark Hughes pulled one back but it was the Blades who picked up the points.

But what was remarkable about the game was that it was the first ever game played in the Premier League. A generation of youngsters hadn’t even been born yet who would believe this was football’s Year Zero. For old timers like myself, the fact that all statistics now date from this time onwards palls and annoys. But back then it was new and exciting. It was as if the last twenty one years hadn’t, er, happened…
