Real Madrid are 'on the verge' of signing Zlatan Ibrahimovic from Paris Saint-Germain, which could, in turn, open the door for Arsenal to make a move for Karim Benzema.
Florentino Perez is thought to have travelled to Paris to discuss the transfer of Ibrahimovic with PSG's Qatari owners. The 33-year-old Swede is thought to want more money, which PSG are unwilling to give him. Real Madrid, however would pay whatever it takes to put Ibrahimovic in the same side as Cristiano Ronaldo.
If Ibrahimovic were to sign for Real Madrid, it would mean bad news for Benzema, who wants to be playing regularly. Suddenly, the Frenchman, who is supposedly one of Perez' favourite players, would fall down the pecking order. That's where Arsenal come in.
Arsène Wenger is a long-term admirer of Benzema and tried to bring him to Arsenal before he joined Real. Recently, Arsenal have been linked with a move for the 27-year-old striker and it's thought that as soon as he becomes available, the Gunners will make their move.
With 22 goals and 15 assists in all competitions last season, Benzema is a striker who not only scores plenty of goals, but makes them too. His link-up and hold-up play are what makes him so attractive to Arsenal. Like Giroud, he'd not only give Arsenal a focal point, but someone their wingers and midfielders can play off. Unlike Giroud, he's versatile and can drift wide when interchanging suits the front three.
One to keep a very close eye on!
