Fans Half-Term Report: Blackburn Rovers

Our new owner carries a pistol, two chickens were thrown in the cells at Ewood, and Maradona was going to be our manager. Crazy times to be a blue and white.

What’s going right?

It depends on which Rovers fans you talk too. To some, including myself, the Venky’s takeover will bring much needed investment to the club, has given fans a sense of adventure that will hopefully result in attractive football and turn Rovers from mid table sluggers to European challengers. Added to this we have a number of young players - Phil Jones, Junior Hoillett, Grant Hanley, Josh Morris, Jason Lowe - that are starting to stake a claim in the first team. Exciting times ahead.

What’s not?

There are plenty of fans that would disagree with the above. They argue getting rid of Big Sam was a huge mistake and the Venky’s takeover a disaster; one that makes the club a laughing stock that will ultimately send us down. Personally, the Venky's PR machine is a little amateurish. The Ronaldinho bid was genuine but the way it was announced - via Venky's facebook page – then removed, then denied, then confirmed, looked a bit chaotic. That said our new owner carries a pistol so I’m not going to complain.

Got the right manager?

It's early days but Steve Kean is saying all the right things. After flying to India to meet the new owners he impressed them so much they guaranteed he wouldn’t be sacked. So he is the Blackburn Rovers manager for the next two and a half years. The owners bought into his philosophy and vision for the club and have publically stated that stability is essential for success. Could he be Ferguson mark 2? He has a confident persona and belief in his abilities. The players appear to be behind him. Added to this his cache in the game isn’t as non-existent as some would have you believe. He was offered the number two job at Chelsea when Scolari took over but turned it down. He can speak seven languages. Seeing as we're looking at a number of South American players being fluent in Spanish and Portuguese will come in handy.

Star player?

This is a tough one. It's great to see Roque back at Ewood. If not just for the fact my girlfriend knows who he is and now I can at least tempt her with a look-see when I'm watching MOTD. Pedersen has been back to somewhere near his best. Nelsen/Samba/Jones have all been excellent at the back but for me it’s Robbo, England’s number one.

Who would you like to sell in January?

Pascal Chimbonda, El-Hadji Diouf, Vincenzo Grella and Benjani. None has done anything wrong; it’s just that I can’t see them getting a game. The car park will be a poorer place for it. That is unless we sign Stephen Ireland.

We were in for Ronaldinho and Venky’s have just opened up in Brazil. Crazier things have happened. We would welcome back Craig Bellamy with open arms.

Who do you want to sign?

Part of me would have loved to have seen Ronaldinho and Beckham at Ewood but realistically this could have led to big problems down the line. The owners want a ‘marquee’ signing but I’m not sure what that means. Riquleme has been “offered”, a very good player, but he isn’t in the same league as goldenballs. We’ve bid for Larsson, would like to see us get Charlie Adam, David Dunn is injury prone so a creative midfielder is a priority, but who? Kaka? We were in for Ronaldinho and Venky’s have just opened up in Brazil. Crazier things have happened. We would welcome back Craig Bellamy with open arms.

Best chant so far?

Chim chiminey, Chim chiminey, Chim chim cheroo, We hate those b*******s in claret n blue...

Best opposition player/team you’ve seen?

I guess I should say Berbatov and Man U considering he scored five and Utd scored seven past us but in reality no one has blown me away. Bale got a couple against us and looked good.

Biggest **** of the season so far?

Neil Warnock for his attack on Diouf, Joey Barton for his attack on Pedersen, and the sneering football journos who refer to Venky’s as “a bunch of chicken farmers”. That’s like saying Abramovich owns a petrol station. It’s a multi-million dollar business with operations all over the globe. Yes their PR machine may not be the best but they should not be underestimated and mocked.

Any other news?

There are rumours that sports fiddlers Kentaro and Jerome Anderson’s SEM are pulling the strings. Does this matter? I’m not sure. Looking at the players they represent I’m not getting too excited.

End of season prediction?

Top ten, just. But next year is a whole different ball game.
