Manchester United: How Gary Neville's Punditry Made Liverpool & Arsenal Fans Like HimGFN.
I'm not one for acronyms (it's the death of the English language in my eyes) but it's what my Football friends would refer to him as when he played for them.
Yes, he was a great player (even as a Liverpool fan you had to admit he always put a shift in) and in the decreasing days of one player staying at one club for their career, in a way admirable.
But he was always Gary 'F******' Neville. The b****** love child of Sir Taggart. The embodiment of what to hate about the Mancs. It would border on hatred towards him, especially the wispy moustache and goatee phase. That and celebrating goals as though he had reached some sort of sexual nirvana.
It was then announced last year then he was to become a pundit on Sky Sports (in light of the revelations about Andy Gray et al). First words uttered by myself and others? ; "I'm cancelling it tomorrow!"
But something happened when watching or listening to him as a pundit. He spoke sense. He pointed out exactly what players were doing right and wrong. He applauded players for doing the right thing, their work ethic, their vision and not once would you hear the main commentator's words recycled verbatim a la' Andy 'F******' Townsend (without doubt the worst pundit around, why ITV feel the need to employ him bewilders). His passion for the sport shines through, and although he may not always be entirely neutral, his enthusiasm enhances his analysis. Something that can't be said of the admittedly handsome but air headed Jamie Redknapp.
So, he is GFN now? He always will be.
But he's now Gary 'F*****' Neville, who's rather good as a pundit.
