German playmaker Ilkay Gundogan has been dropping big hints about a Premier League move, saying last month "Playing outside Germany is one of my big goals. If one day I leave here, I'd like to play in Spain or for one of the big teams in England."
Indeed, with Borussia Dortmund having a disastrous season, it may not be long before Gundogan jumps ship, and according to The Express, it's Van Gaal who'll be making the move for him this January.
The 24-year-old made just three appearances last season, but is now fighting fit and understandably attracting some big name suitors across Europe's top leagues. Van Gaal wants some solid talent to bolster the midfield for the remainder of the campaign, and it's understood that a £16m bid would be enough to secure the services of the German international.
