Man United: Forget Unlucky Rafael & Sign Colombian Santiago Arias
Nothing quite beats the love - the gross, palpable love - some set of fans have towards mercurial full-backs.
West Ham had Tomas Repka. Chelsea, Celestine Babayaro. Man United have Rafael.
Rafa's a competent (often VERY competent) right back who has suffered terribly with injuries since joining the then-biggest club in the world way back in the bygone days of 2008. Ninety-nine appearances in six years is not very good. Sadly for fans and the full-back himself, you can only survive so long on good will alone. Man United need a revamp and have to dump dead wood - Rafael sadly fits into that.
Tell you who is good (often VERY good), though - 22-year-old Colombian international and PSV Eindhoven right-back Santiago Arias. One season into his career in Holland and he's already nearly made a third of the amount of appearances that Rafael has total (26 appearances so far, in all competitions).
It's not just consistency on his side, there's very real quality there too. Much like many of the Colombians who've burst into football (or the wider internet's consciousness) in the last few years, he's fast, strong and technically astute. He's also been linked with United by literally everyone (including The Sun today).
So United fans, unchain yourself from your blind love for the slightly-fat Brazilian right-back and get the readymade upgrade you so deserve.
