Man Utd Enter £50M Race For Liverpool Ace
The race for Liverpool's Raheem Sterling is set got be one of the big transfer sagas of the summer and now Manchester United want in on the action. According to the Sun (subscription required), United have enquired about Sterling, thus making their interest known to all other clubs.
Arsenal, Chelsea and other big clubs from around Europe are also keeping a close eye on the Sterling situation, but Manchester United's financial might will have other interested parties worried. In a race that could see the 20-year-old sold for £50million, clubs must be ruthless in their approach when bidding. United's willingness and ability to pay some of the highest wages in the world, means that they'd be more than happy to propose a very attractive offer indeed.
However, as Sterling stated recently, it's not just about money for the young man. Sterling seems like he wants to move his career forward and play for a side that will both be in the Champions League next season and competing for the domestic league. If Liverpool can't prove they are that club, they will almost certainly lose him. Another craving Sterling has is for appreciation. It seems that Brendan Rodger's attempts to keep Sterling 'grounded' are frustrating the player and a possible reason his PR on the contract situation has been loud and proud (e.g. doing an interview with BBC).
So more valuable than Manchester United's financial firepower will be their ability to convince the player and sell themselves. However, Louis van Gaal won't be seen on his knees pleading with a 20-year-old player.
