Man United are preparing a last gasp bid to sign Villarreal centre-back Gabriel Paulista from under the noses of Arsenal, who had been reportedly close to completing the deal.
According to the Daily Star, Louis van Gaal is a long time admirer of the 24-year-old defender, and sees him as a key man to boost his inexperienced defence.
Nonetheless, Arsene Wenger has already suggested a move is imminent for the Villarreal man, and the Red Devils may well have waited too long to try and intercept the deal.
“Talks are progressing well." said the Arsenal boss. "There is no need to say much more at this stage. Talks are slowly progressing but there is a chance we can strike a deal. We want the player and don't necessarily want to do it in the summer - we have to try and sort it out now. We are ready to pay the price for a player if he is good enough. If the price is right, we will pay.
