He's made his name as one of Europe's finest pivotal midfielders and has been sorely missed by Manchester City since he joined up with his Ivory Coast teammates. His form before Christmas, when Manchester City were striving to finish top at Christmas for the first time in a very long time was ridiculous. Fetching from defence, distributing intelligently, breaking up opposition attacks and chipping in with goals, he was the in-form midfielder in the Premier League. Yet as a kid Yaya Touré dreamt of being a striker, and his hero was the original Ronaldo.

Speaking to Puma.com/football before he hopped on the plane to Gabon, he said, "every football player, when you are young, you like to score goals – to be the hero. All the time, when I was young, I always played striker. I was good."

When asked who he idolised, he followed up with, "for a long time, it was this fantastic team of Barcelona's – Ronaldo. When you saw Ronaldo play with Barcelona, he was the one that would take the ball from midfield – or another position – take the ball and drive it and score a fantastic goal. I think, at that moment, I realised how football is good. How you can work hard to be one the best player's in the world. And I think Ronaldo, at that time, was a fantastic, incredible player."

Judging by his cool finishing at times this season, it seems the time spent idolising Il Phenomeno was well spent.
