Manchester United To Pay Millions For Star They Could Have Had Cheap
Manchester United have today been linked with the signing of Southampton’s Nathaniel Clyne but they could have got him on the cheap a couple of years ago.
Clyne’s contract at his former club Crystal Palace ran out in the summer of 2012. United had long been linked with a move for the full-back but failed to get a deal done in the January window, opting to instead wait and get the player on a free.
No doubt confident that their status would see Clyne jump at the chance to sign for them, he instead opted for Southampton, explaining: "I knew if I came to Southampton I would get a lot of game time.
"It is an up-and-coming club and they have a project here. They do not just want to sit with what they have, they want to push forward for European football.”
Having forced his way into the England squad and with Southampton now in a comfortable financial position, it will now take big money for United to get their man. Expect the Saints to bleed them dry, just as they did with Luke Shaw last summer.
