Manchester United are on the hunt for a really good defender because they don't have enough of them. Chris Smalling may be in good form, but it's Chris Smalling we're talking about. United need a hard nut with some experience and Valencia's Nicolas Otamendi might just be the perfect man for the job.
According to the Express, United are ready to trigger Otamendi's huge £36m release clause. Seeing as Mats Hummels would cost something similar, it seems like both options are being considered and only Louis van Gaal will have the final say.
Otamendi has enjoyed a very good season with Valencia and has fast become one of the best defenders in La Liga since joining from Porto in 2013.
Otamendi would, of course, be joining his compatriot Marcos Rojo at Old Trafford if he were to make the move. The pair may be LvG's long-term plan for a cohesive and effective centre-back partnership.
