This Sunday promises to offer as nerve-jangling a final day as ever for those battling at the bottom of the table. Remarkably, just one point separates five teams trying to avoid the two remaining and disastrous relegation spots. Blackburn, Wolves, Birmingham, Blackpool and Wigan will be embroiled in a desperate mud fight the likes of which haven’t been seen since Alexis Colby and Crystal Carrington scratched at each other’s hair in Dynasty.
Trying to work out who could go down based on different results is like watching Inception after six cans of Special Brew. In other words, it’s ultra complicated. But don’t worry, we’ve worked it all out for you. We think.
WOLVERHAMPTON WANDERERS v BLACKBURN ROVERS
Whoever wins this mouth-watering fixture stays up. Fact. But that’s it as far as facts go. The rest is mind melting. Prepare your head...
IF THEY DRAWBoth could go down if Birmingham, Blackpool and Wigan all manage a win. However if only 2 of Birmingham, Blackpool and Wigan find a win, then Blackburn will be safe and Wolves will go down due to Wolves’ inferior goal difference – a potentially incredible finale to the season at Molineux. If only one of Birmingham, Blackpool and Wigan find a win, both teams will be safe. Cor.
IF BLACKBURN LOSE Barring a 7-0 hammering, they will be relegated only if 2 of Birmingham, Blackpool and Wigan win.
IF WOLVES LOSE Relegated if two ofBirmingham, Blackpool and Wigan win. But additionally, due to inferior goals scored, they will also be relegated if they lose by 2 clear goals and Birmingham and Blackpool draw their games. If they lose by four goals, Wigan will go above them with a draw too. Meaty.
Tottenham Hotspur v BIRMINGHAM CITY
IF THEY WIN Premiership survival will only be guaranteed if Wolves and Blackburn draw, or if both Blackpool and Wigan don’t win their games by a higher goal margin (Blackpool one goal, Wigan two goals) due to inferior goals scored
Which teams will find themselves plummeting into the Championship? Who will be the heroes and villains of the day? And most importantly, which world is the real dream world?
IF THEY DRAW If both Blackpool and Wigan win, Birmingham will be relegated. But if Blackpool and Wigan draw or lose their games, Birmingham will be safe. If Midlands rivals Wolves are end of a large defeat, this would help Birmingham’s case for survival too.
IF THEY LOSE Both Blackpool and Wigan have to lose, and by at least the same goal margin, otherwise Birmingham are down.
Manchester United v BLACKPOOL
IF THEY WIN Guaranteed survival if at least one of Birmingham and Wigan lose or draw, or if Wolves and Blackburn draw. However if both Birmingham AND Wigan win, Blackpool will be hoping that Wigan’s goal margin will not be more than two goals more than their own, otherwise Blackpool could still go down with the loser between Wolves and Blackburn. Confused enough?
IF THEY DRAW They could only survive if both Birmingham and Wigan lose, or if one of Birmingham and Wigan lose and Wolves lose by a margin of two goals.
IF THEY LOSE They will be relegated unless Wigan lose and Birmingham lose by more than one goal than themselves. Sheesh.
Stoke City v WIGAN
IF THEY WIN Guaranteed survival if at least one of Birmingham and Wigan lose or draw, or if Wolves and Blackburn draw. If Birmingham and Blackpool win and the blockbuster at Molineux doesn’t end in a draw, Wigan will be relegated.
IF THEY DRAW Relegated unless BOTH Birmingham and Blackpool lose.
IF THEY LOSE Relegated unless BOTH Birmingham and Blackpool lose by two more goals than themselves.
So there you have it. As clear cut a scenario as you’re likely to find. Which teams will find themselves plummeting into the Championship? Who will be the heroes and villains of the day? And most importantly, which world is the real dream world?
Get ready for a relegation rollercoaster on Sunday.
