It’s hard to imagine it now but there was a time when a footballer has a genuinely hard decision to make, if offered the chance to sign for both Manchester United and Spurs.
That’s the dilemma Paul Gascoigne faced in 1988. Both Alex Ferguson’s Manchester United and Terry Venables’ Tottenham had bids accepted by Newcastle, with Gazza eventually opting for a move to White Hart Lane.
Gascoigne was back on TV this weekend on BT Sport and the troubled star was quizzed about his decision. Gazza admitted regret and reveals that it was the perks provided for him family that finally swung things in Spurs’ favour.
