DEGEN You ******* ***:The Funniest Liverpool Moment I Ever Saw
No, not the moment when the 'legendary' Erik Meijer took a thunderous shot full in the face from a distance of roughly five feet, looked vaguely dazed for a moment then proceeded to dismiss the impact with a cartoon-esque shake of the head, a gesture which if shown in slow motion would likely have involved jowls swinging wildly from side to side before trotting away as though nothing had ever happened.
I'm frankly uncertain as to whether the chant of "he's big, he's red, he's off his f****** head" came before or after this glorious moment but it summed up his approach to the game in his one forgettable season with us quite perfectly.
No. Not this. The greatest moment that I have ever witnessed from a player in a Liverpool shirt came, as so many beautiful moments have, from the representative of the People's Republic of Bootle; one Mr James Carragher.
One other player was involved; Phillip Degen, a Swiss international right back now plying his trade once again at FC Basel.
Now Degen's three season career with Liverpool could be most kindly summed up as somewhat disappointing. The fans were never convinced by the player, it would appear that neither was Carra.
I don't remember the game, I feel that it was televised but can't be sure and memory may possibly embroider the detail of what follows but the spirit is true and wondrous.
Degen had, if memory serves, entered the fray as a late substitute, playing in an advanced right wing position somewhere ahead of Carragher. There was a loose ball somewhere ahead of Degen which went out of play for a Liverpool throw. The hapless Swiss defender made to trot toward the ball then seemingly changed his mind and headed back infield, apparently under the impression that he was safe to leave the retrieval of the match ball to the club's Vice Captain.
What followed was a dash of prime Marsh Lane invective.
"DEGEN!" screamed the clearly furious Carragher "get the f***** ball, yer t*t."
And as he trotted away from the scene of the crime, our colossus offered his final verdict on the situation, the player and the player's possibility of a future at the club;
Just one of the million reasons that Liverpool fans will love Jamie Carragher forever.
