Van Gaal Predicts No Signings For Man United This Month
The Manchester Evening News quote Van Gaal saying that it is difficult to find the right quality in January. Despite numerous links to players, it seems this transfer window will be a quiet one for the red half of Manchester.
“I don’t think that we shall be very active as not many players of a certain level are available,” said Van Gaal.
“I have said that when we buy a player he has to be better than the players that are playing now and that is a difficult job.”
Van Gaal's comments will be hard to swallow for Man United fans who, like anyone else who's watched them this season, will know that the defence needs improving and that even in January there's got to be someone better than Chris Smalling available.
Even if availability is an issue, money clearly isn't. Especially considering recent rumours of Van Gaal having access to a kitty of up to £150million, which mirrors the amount Man United spent in the summer. All players have a price, even if they're 'not available', and it would be unwise of Man United not to bring in one or two defensive bodies for the second half of the season.
However, Van Gaal could simply be using a semi-believable excuse to keep Man Unite's business quiet for the time being. It's also important to remember that January transfer windows are always most active in the final few days, and once one big player moves, it tends to cause a chain reaction.
