Wenger Reveals He Was Once Paid In Cigarettes And Sold Them Too
Arsene Wenger faced some probing questions on the subject of smoking after Arsenal 'keeper Wojciech Szczesny was caught puffing in the showers. Where most managers may have been more reserved and brushed off the rumour, Wenger went on to reveal all about his tar-tainted past.
Wenger said, "I grew up in a pub and you did not see from here to the window because of the smoke and I spent my youth selling cigarettes.
"I am against smoking, but I have grown up in a period when I had to accomplish military service. At the end of the month, we got paid by cigarettes, so it incited us to smoke.
"I smoked myself when I didn't play anymore, when I became a young coach. We got only alerted later. The other day I was on French television and they showed me on the bench smoking a cigarette. I didn't even think it was me!"
Wenger's history and experience of smoking is almost undoubtedly why he's so understanding and calm with regards to young players like Wilshere and Szczesny having a fag now and then.
