Arsenal: Why Wenger Would Be Mad To Sign Ivanovic

The transfer window always throws up some odd stories, and now the Metro are linking Arsenal with a move for Chelsea's Branislav Ivanovic.

Wait, what?

Bacary Sagna has already agreed a move to Man City, and Thomas Vermaelen could be headed to the other half of Manchester, so Arsenal obviously need to sign some defenders this summer.

Ivanovic is built like a tank and it seems like he only feels joy when crushing the dreams of innocent attackers, which are ideal qualities for a defender really. The 30-year-old can play at right-back or centre-back, both positions where Arsene Wenger needs to strengthen this summer. On paper, he'd be a great signing for Arsenal, but it's not going to happen.

Sometimes it feels Jose Mourinho does things just to spite other people. Spurs were about to sign Willian, so Chelsea swooped in. Liverpool looked likely to sign Mohamed Salah, but he wasn't about to just let that happen. Cesc Fabregas is an outstanding midfielder, who may well make the difference to Chelsea's title challenge next year, but signing him also made Arsenal fans really, really angry.

He blocked Demba Ba's loan move to Arsenal when the Gunners signed Mesut Ozil and suddenly became a title rival. There's no way he'd sell Ivanovic to them now. Sure, he sold Juan Mata to Man United, but David Moyes was there at the time - it was like giving a Macbook to a baby.

It's hard to see why Chelsea would want to sell Ivanovic anyway, especially for the £7 million fee that's reported. John Terry can't have too long left, and David Luiz has just been sold to PSG - the Serbian is still a key part of their squad. It's not going to happen, right?
