Why Manchester United Target Michu Is Perfect For The Premier League

Who is he?

Pointing up with evident pride at a photograph hanging up on the wall of his office at Rayo Vallecano’s training ground was the side’s then boss, José María Sandoval, showing off an image what is clearly his favourite player, Michu, in full-blooded celebration of another goal that eventually helped the Primera side stay up. In fact the footballer who was technically listed as a midfielder scored 15 of them in la Liga, just two less than Fernando Llorente who may well be leading the line for Spain in the European Championships.

Strengths

The powerfully-built, tall, physically-imposing footballer looks absolutely perfect for the rigours of English football - 20 years ago ideally - and that’s something noted by Sandoval who claimed that it’s an ideal home for a footballer who began his career in the lower leagues at Real Oviedo before moving on to Celta Vigo. “He’s deadly going forward and sacrifices himself a lot in defence. He has incredible aerial power. He’d be an interesting player for the Premier League.”

Michu is a footballer who lives the cliché of wearing his heart on his sleeve and giving every last ounce of sweat. Every goal is celebrated with an attempt to rip the net off whilst every miss is rued with a hefty boot to the advertising hoardings. “Michu would be the Hulk because of the way he changes when he scores,” noted team-mates Tito and Piti when asked to compare the attacker to a super-hero.

Weaknesses

Michu is the uncompromising, snarling battering ram needed when in a scrap either to go up or avoid going down. Sophistication, consistency, pace and speed are not the footballer’s greatest strengths. Hence Michu on his best day scored the fastest ever away goal seen at the Santiago Bernabeu this season with a strike after 15 seconds but in the home match at Rayo was sent off for a frustrated smash of a tackle late-on when things weren’t going Rayo’s way. As much as there is a huge amount to admire in Michu the subtlety and silky skills required at a club at the level of Manchester United may be somewhat lacking

Chances of signing him

Easy. The footballer has already said that English football interests him - as would a regular salary after being at a club that has huge problems paying its players - and Rayo Vallecano are such a selling side that their footballers are stamped with bar codes.
