In what must be a world’s first, Japan is considering allowing emergency services calls to be placed through Twitter and other social media platforms.

In the review of the devastration that had been caused in Japan from the Tsunami, The National Fire and Disaster Management Agency of the country plans several meetings with the Head of Twitter Japan and other social media sites, including Mixi and NHN.

Japan is keen to embrace these new methods of communication should the traditional two-way telephone system fail. The next meeting between the authorites and social media companies is due to take place in November.
