Wii U Reviewed: How Nintendo Are Turning Innovation Into Stagnation

Nintendo used to be the king of consoles, but with the Wii U their focus has firmly shifted from great gaming to gimmicky, hype-filled marketing. If you're a serious gamer, then this console just isn't for you.

Wii U

Nintendo President, Satoru Iwata, owns a small cinema on the outskirts of Carlisle – it’s just off the A69. He doesn’t really; I’m just using a painful analogy to explain why I think the Wii U will fail.

Anyway, this cinema shows a strange mix of classic old cartoons and newly released DVD fodder. It used to be really popular, but attendances have dropped in recent times. So he needs to take action.

You might think he’d start by reviewing the films he shows – maybe that’s the problem? If they showed better films, more people might want to come. But no; this is a Nintendo cinema and they do things differently.

Instead, he gathers together a crack team of dungaree wearing creatives; he sets them the task of reinventing his cinema – to blow people’s minds. And after an afternoon of doodling, eating bananas and playing Lego; they come up with something a little bit special.

It’s essentially a fuck-off big hat.

They used to make truly great games – now they make great ads, they devise fantastic marketing campaigns.

It’s white; battery powered and features lots of clever bells and whistles which allow it to ‘talk’ to movies. So when you’re watching a film, your massive hat is going to start honking and burbling and rumbling.

It’s a revolution – it changes the way we watch movies. And for film directors, it unlocks an exciting new world of creative possibilities. Now they’ve got this powerful tool, they’d be daft not to use it.

So they start to create films which make the most of this buzzing, flashing, bleeping, burping, Internet enabled hat wonder. They re-release all of their old films with new hat functionality added.

Mr Iwata thinks this will save his cinema from going bust. He can keep showing the same dusty old line-up of movies he’s always shown, while making infinite money by selling his celebrity endorsed Nintendo movie hats – which come in a range of colours.

This all sounds daft – but it’s essentially what the Wii U is attempting to do for the struggling fortunes of Nintendo. And it’s what the original Wii has already done. It’s the ability to sell an average console using only the power of marketing and a gimmicky controller.

It’s what Nintendo does best these days. They used to make truly great games – now they make great ads, they devise fantastic marketing campaigns.

There’s only so long you can keep distracting people with gimmicks and hype. If you’re looking for creative and innovative gaming these days, you can find it on your tablet or smartphone

The Wii U is similar in power to an Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3 – the difference is that it comes with a tea tray sized controller – it’s bigger than the console itself. And like the Nintendo movie hat, it has all the bells and whistles you could want – including a touch screen.

It gives Nintendo something to market. It’s not just a controller, it’s a new concept in gaming. It’s bringing families together, it’s dazzling celebrities, it’s freeing games designers from the shackles of not having a giant tea tray sized controller. And it’s yours for only £250.

From a gaming point of view – it’s likely to do exactly the same as the Wii motion controller. It will encourage developers to make an avalanche of shit games as they struggle and strain to find ways of making use of these gimmicky new abilities. It’s creating a new range of games design problems – rather than solving anything.

And when the novelty of the tea tray controller wears off – you’re left with an average console and a range of overpriced and poorly made games. It’s the reason why the attics and cupboards of the land are already packed full of discarded Wii consoles.

That’s the problem for Nintendo. There’s only so long you can keep distracting people with gimmicks and hype. If you’re looking for creative and innovative gaming these days, you can find it on your tablet or smartphone; games won’t cost you £40, they’ll be free or cost a couple of quid.

Cinema goers aren’t interested in wearing big hats – they go to watch good movies. And it’s the same for gamers. If you fork out £250 for a console, you want to play good games – and that’s no longer the focus for Nintendo.

I think you are confusing Nintendo with Apple. What are your favourite games?

pat_k 9:07 am, 18-Sep-2012

What a rubbish article!I seriously hope no one pays you for such crap journalism! I could do better than that! Ninetendo have some amazing games coming out (ZombieU, Pikimin 3, Assassins Creed, Nintendoland, Batman, Darksiders, Bayoneta 2, etc) and are developing some games that will be truly spectacular (Zelda in 2014- the biggest zelda ever!! The controller will revolutionise gaming and already has some brilliant features. Your entitled to your opinion but its very much a knee jerk response without any substance, wait and see just how great the Wii U will be...

Paddy 10:18 am, 18-Sep-2012

This is a very poor article with a really sh*t analogy. You have virtually no facts in this article to back up your sadly misinformed opinion about Nintendo's Wii U.

GT 10:23 am, 18-Sep-2012

I take it for the next 2 years your contempt with that 512mb ram console, huh, what a powerhouse! The only internal specks Nintendo revealed for its console was the memory and disc read. Both blow current gen out of the water. I listened to fanboys' (such as yourself) and then i actually listened to Nintendo and I've come to the conclusion that you guys havent a clue as to what you're talking about. I don't have to be Einstein to know that a new gpu in today's market is going to be better than what was available out 6 years ago. Also, you have the napoleon syndrome. WiiU ... i know u hate the name. And I know it should have been called something more masculine for you to get on board with the new system. But that is life. Along with my new basic 8gb console...i also preordered blackops2. The basic version is perfect for me. If I need more storage, I have my sandisk class 10 32gb sdcard.Plus a "core" gamer like me isnt going to play nintendo land (or whatever its called) thats on the deluxe version. May get the pro controller as well. Have fun playing on technology made 6 years ago! LOL

This is the first time I came to this site, and after read this garbage, boy, it will be the last. Are you drunk? Seriously. I will not singled out every stupid argument you have mention (that will be time consuming), but rather provide you a few actual facts in case you've been living under the rock recently. 1. Wii U pre-orders is already sold-out in North America. A number of high-profile retail outlets in the United Kingdom have reported phenomenal pre-order sales for Wii U also. 2. Bayonetta 2 is exclusive for Wii U. 3. Several developers already stated that Wii U is very capable delivering 1080p-quality games in 60 fps. FYI, PS3 and 360 still stuck at 30 fps 4. Wii U possess 1GB of RAM for game boot and 1GB of RAM for the operating system (OS) for a total of 2GB. FYI, the Wii U’s 1GB of accessible game RAM is almost double that of the Xbox 360 and quadruple of PS3 5. Wii U can clock discs at a 22MB/s compared to Xbox 360′s 15.85 MB/s (DVD) and the PlayStation 3′s 9MB/s (Blu-ray) speeds, which means game loading times should see a big cut. 6. "If you’re looking for creative and innovative gaming these days, you can find it on your tablet or smartphone". Agree, Angry Birds is the most creative games ever! /sarcasm You remind me of that old Michael Patcher, a so-called game industries analyst and failed future-teller. I believe he is your actual father.

Sam 10:39 am, 18-Sep-2012

Like Paul said, the company lacking substance full of low quality games is Apple. You're trying to tell me that games on your tablet or ipod are better than The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, Super Mario Galaxy, Metroid Prime 3 or even Pokemon? This article makes no sense. Nintendo has some of the best selling games in history and its not just because of marketing.

Marc 10:55 am, 18-Sep-2012

If Zelda in 2014 will be the biggest ever will have to be seen. It depends on the success of the WiiU. Nintendos cashpile will not last for all eternity when they throw out the money on the wrong end (fat PR budgets instead of making the console payable / competitive for non-wii owners). Nintendo always has had a periphery problem as they price the stuff the same as all others just that all others are forced to do so to make up for the lose of the sold consoles (sold below costs), where as nintendo earns from each console sold and would not need to overprice its plastic productions. Nintendo surely has a solid contender in the ring with the WiiU but they have a few problems to solve if it is not meant to die when the X720 lands or the '6 month of novelity' wear off. The Wii required Wii Fit to survive it and sports resorts later on cause as the author unluckily claims correctly: third party focused an trash flooding the console with remote gimmick games (the whole carnival series, minigame collections at absurd prices up to 80 USD here in europe and crap like that) and should that repeat for the wiiU then it has no future cause people will inevitably use the cheaper alternative then through iOS and Android tablets or cheaper gimmick consoles like the Ouya

Gez 11:01 am, 18-Sep-2012

Yeah ur right about creating new design probs rather than solving but the 3, 5 or 7 games which do kick arse will be enough to justify this machine. You will still need another console though and thats fine cos i buy as many bits of junk as my wife will allow. 3ds xl case in point. Life could go on without it but i like the gimmick. I will say the wii launch was a turd though. I actually sold the wii shortly after launch and didnt jump back in until i got a red wii a few years later.when a bunch of good software was available.

Phil 11:08 am, 18-Sep-2012

Well... I take it from the title of the website that it's only intention is to sabotage. But you do so without creativity or ingenuity! Struggling fortunes? Good games no longer a focus? If the Wii U is gonna flop so darn hard then why did all the American preorders sell out in a few days!!? This is typical PS360 fanboyism... Urgh... Nintendo are the greats at video games and will stay that way for a while, what other companies have IPs spanning almost 30 years and still get amazing reviews? This website is lame.. Just because Nintendo make games and not movies

Scott 11:10 am, 18-Sep-2012

This is not a review! Try again after actually using the product. I agree that Nintendo could do to bring some new IP's to the market, but I don't think that their attempts to find new ways to play should be regarded as distractions. It may well be true that innovative and creative games can be found on a smartphone or tablet these days, but nothing on either platform has managed to keep my attention for more than a few minutes.

Kody 11:40 am, 18-Sep-2012

Apparently you have never played a Zelda or Mario game on Wii. Besides the fact that ur a hater....fine..whatevs. U really should not only play Skyward Sword or a Super Mario galaxy game, but next time you thing about basing ur whole article on an analogy, Dont. I wanted to get mad at all the non-sense ur spewing. I just couldn't get over how bad ur analogical reasoning is.

moe hunter 11:51 am, 18-Sep-2012

Seriously dude and u have a wiiu and have had it for over a year and know that. It's rubbish hmmm.mmm. Last. Time I checked its not out yet so making a judgment. Off maybe. A few demos and your hatred for a multi billionaire. Company, IE Nintendo. Which in my opinion is plain crazy lol hating on a company like they give a damn. Lol no generation is ever the same in the. Gaming industry so stop comparing the Wii and wiiu just stop it. Psone, successful. Pstwo highly successful, psthree, not so great. Nes, successful, snes, successful, n64, did its job, gamecube, not as good as it should have done, Wii oh as we know best selling home console. Of this Gen. Fact is every generation. Is different people's. Perception on a company can and will sometimes have a radical shift depending on the machine that company releases. And how they carry. On supporting it so your article is just your. Own little world of Nintendo hatred. And any human with sense is going to. Think of your article as some bad joke, don't give. Up your day job pal.

Recoil 12:39 pm, 18-Sep-2012

Tom, you obviously don't know what the hell a review is. How 'bout you actually try the Wii U first, THEN form an opinion?

Vigo 1:11 pm, 18-Sep-2012

You are obviously stupid or just attention seeking. You've clearly not had any time with a Wii U nor do you keep up with the news regarding what is in it, what is coming out etc... Every comment regarding wii u specs is pure speculation on your part. I don't think the wii was successful based on their adverts but more to do with the fact it offered something different. Once again they are offering something different and it may or may not sell well. The only certain thing is haters like you will carry on hating. I think people like you just can't take the fact that a company has evolved and remained successful. Sony and MS will try to copy any successful feature that nintendo invent and that seems to hurt the fanboys even more. The bit I love most in all of this is that nintendo were in the Sony position 10 years ago. Beaten comprehensively by a technically inferior console (twice in a row). Nobody saw a way back against the 'cool' new consoles from Sony and MS so nintendo went out on a limb and made something different so create their own market and that completely shook sony and MS. Their late to the market attempts to be wii were pathetic, tiresome and impractical (PSmove) and impractical and tiresome (kinect). Neither work for games. The wii did make poor games but also some of the best games ever that will be remembered for generations whereas PS3 and Xbox360 will be remembered for parts of franchises When the PS4 and Xbox 3 both have touchscreen controllers and only the most incremental of graphical updates it will be great to watch sony and MS fanboys change their tune or change their console.

Lee 2:28 pm, 18-Sep-2012

i dont like you tom......

jedidethfreak 3:09 pm, 18-Sep-2012

So, you're reviewing something you've never touched, eh? Seems legit. Or not - the moment you said it's "similar in power to the Xbox 360," I knew you were some butthurt fanboy, angry that Bayonetta 2 is exclusive to WiiU. We all know you're getting one anyway.

Maddogg 4:24 pm, 18-Sep-2012

Well this is just a bad article aint it! Where is your evidence about the power compared to ps4 and NextBox? Cos if you have there specs and the Wii U's please share as we would all like to see them. Also you talk about the Gimmick controllers but will you be saying the same when Mircosoft and Copy (sorry I mean Sony) release their own versions? You also have not done any research in the history of video games. Nintendo brought us Anologue controls, D-pads, Shoulder buttons, 6 button pads, controllers that were designed to fell comfortable and finally brought us 4 player games as a standard option. And never mind the fact the games industry was dead after Atari broke it in the early eighties only for Nintendo to bring it back stronger! These are called facts and that is why I use them as 'evidence' something you fail to use in your article. If you feel you would like to discuss this with someone who has played games since the eighties and has a degree in Computer games design I am more than welcome to responded to any email you send me. Kevin 'Maddogg' Wolfenden

Anthony Teasdale 5:35 pm, 18-Sep-2012

I don't know (or care) enough about games to critique this piece, but I do know that it made me laugh, and made me interested in the subject. If I wanted a serious review I'd go to an appropriate site. But I don't, so this wins. Very funny.

Jock_Nerd 6:59 pm, 18-Sep-2012

I read the byline, and I knew enough that this guy didn't know what he was talking about. Then I saw the word fu** as I scrolled down, and that was it. Out.

Anthony 9:14 pm, 18-Sep-2012

I could only get through the first four paragraphs before I have had enough. This is honestly one of the worst articles I think I've ever read. Very blatant bias and no facts to back up any claims. The author is basically just pulling facts out of his ass and labeling them as truth and the only logical proof he provides is "This is true because nintendo sux the big one lolol".

jbaby 12:40 am, 19-Sep-2012

lmao this writer is a joke

Pete 8:57 am, 19-Sep-2012

I really enjoyed this article, made me smile & I think you made a good point. It's funny how people bandy about the 'fanboy' tag when clearly getting so goddam upset over a piece of consumer electronics surely points to themselves being 'fanboys'. Calm down dear. None of these companies care about you - only the money you spend. And on that front Nintendo & Sony are up against it. Both have been lacking innovation recently. The Wii was an awesome console - at launch - but it has been milked into oblivion. That was in a world bereft of iPads & iPod Touches, so the WiiU is really going to need something more than it's tea tray controller - its going to need a new way to approach its market. I think the WiiU will do alright but it doesn't excite me like the original Wii did, I probably will not be buying based on current information. Anyway, flame on...

Tom Okker 12:42 pm, 19-Sep-2012

LOUD NOISES!!

W. Brown 3:17 pm, 19-Sep-2012

Reviewing something you've not actually had a hands on with? Do you also do movie reviews of films that haven't even been filmed yet? Oh, and poor analogy.

Will Collins 5:06 pm, 20-Sep-2012

Oh Dear. Yeah why can't they do the sensible thing and just add extra power each time like the other big console makers do. "If you're a serious gamer, then this console just isn't for you" You state this like it is a negative, aiming your console at a different target buyer to your competition. I can only hope you wrote this article tongue in cheek with the hope that you'll get a nice lot of messages, even if they are 95% negative.
