We know teenagers are rammed full of sexy hormones. There are leaflets about it. As a former teenage girl, even in my most emo, poetry writing, self loathing, "Mum, if you don't SHUT UP I'm going to take an overdose of Kalms, NO-ONE gets me, GOD!" trippy, weepy moments, I would have leapt at the chance to leave the house in lucite heels and a string bikini and walk down the street as a photographer from a national newspaper followed me and validated my shaky teen sense of personal hotness.
Also at the top of my wish list was a sophisticated older boyfriend. Because I was really deep and mature for my age and they'd GET ME. (And they could drive.)
But if anyone should be protected from what they want, it's 17 year olds. Courtney Stodden may be living the dream - but it's the dream of a very young woman who has grown up watching Rock Of Love and Girls of the Playboy Mansion.
Courtney is a fixture of the Daily Mail's horror sidebar. She likes to "pour her curves" into bikinis and "flaunt her curves" in the snow, in pumpkin patches and at monster truck rallys. And the Mail is insidious and poisonous, not judging, never ever judging, but pointing out that everyone who witnesses these displays finds them disgusting. Well, not the photographer or the stringer but PASSING FAMILIES AND CHILDREN! Won't somebody think of the children?!

The Mail does not pour the same level of energy into stirring up vitriol for Courtney's husband, Green Mile actor Doug Hutchinson, 51, who also appears in the pics, his right hand up her skirt and the left one poised to give any other passing creeps a high five. This is a guy who has spent entirely too much time thinking of the children. As Courtney was only 16 when she got hitched, her mother had to sign the marriage certificate. She isn't being singled out for any special negative attention either.
When the Mail is having a Courtney day (and she's starring in the sidebar at least once a week) I cannot tear my eyes from the screen. I am waiting for the subs to realise they've made a big huge mistake. That the "Shame the slutty slut!" line needs to be switched to "let's capture the paedo!" That Courtney is one of the children we should be thinking of.
You're meant to be experimenting when you're a 17 year old girl. There is no better time to make terrible mistakes and learn from them. It's a period of your life where you're allowed to spend half the week off your face on ROFLcopter and the other half taking pictures of your tits. But those scenes should be playing out at school or college, in friends' cars and at house parties. Not at the end of a long range lens. Not on a cable talk show. Not in the arms of a guy who could be older than your Dad. And not on the Daily Mail showbiz sidebar.
