Night cycling is ace. There’s nothing better than whizzing through country lanes under the stars dodging pot holes and scampering wildlife. The reduced visibility adds to the challenge, but of course, heightens the danger. Foolishly I’ve put off getting some safety gear safe in the false knowledge that other road users are bound to spot me as I zip along silently in the dead of night.
Other than a mild invincibility complex, my main issue with cycle safety wear has revolved around petty vanity. While I’m not partial to being flattened by a passing people carrier, polyester hi-viz vests and bicycle clips are even less alluring. A recent near miss persuaded me to think again.
Luckily the good folk at flipflip.co.uk have come up with a handy stow away gadget for fashion conscious cyclists everywhere.
Made from a layer of neoprene and a layer of Reflexite Hi-Viz Retro Reflective Material, their handy reflective squares fit snugly in your pockets. The neoprene layer grips the inside to keep it in place and the reflective panel sits outside alerting passing motorists to your presence.
Self-respect and personal safety intact, at the end of your journey you can stow away the flipflips ready for your next cycle ride.
Priced at £16.95 for a pair, FlipFlip are available to buy online at www.flipflip.co.uk
London stockists include Bicycle Workshop (Notting Hill), Look Mum No Hands (Old Street),Tokyo Fixed Gear (Soho) and Fitzrovia Cycles (Fitzrovia).
