Happy Birthday Rihanna: Please Eat Bitches Like Me For Breakfast

This week marks the release of Rihanna’s 6th mainstream album ‘Talk that Talk.’ If, like me, you’ve found yourself wondering why you can’t remember what life is like without Rih-Rih, it’s because she’s released numerous albums each year since the beginning of time. In fact in the past 6 years she’s sold over 20 million of them, sold over 60 million singles and along with guest singing across endless tracks with the biggest stars in music, she’s become one of the top selling artists of all time. In short, she’s a pretty big deal… a big hot, sexy deal. With a great arse.

When Rihanna first arrived on our musical radar she was portrayed as a young ‘innocent’ R&B star who was signed up to her first record deal by the 'King of Hip Hop' Jay Z. Back in the day, Rihanna sported bright clothing, sang with a strong Barbadian accent and possessed the fun and party girl nature of a dance-hall singer. With the gift of hindsight, knowing what you know about Rihanna now, when you look back at her first videos, in particular ‘Pon de replay,’ it’s quite obvious that there is a naughty glint in her eye… a mischievous filthy glint that oozes a ‘you know I eat bitches like you for breakfast… I’m gonna strip you down and ruin you’ vibe. Or maybe that’s just me.

Either way, it was very clear from the beginning that this girl was different. This girl was trouble. Now when I say she's naughty, I don’t mean in a Beyoncé shaking her booty in a bikini way or a Lady Gaga showing off her ‘lady ga-garden’ in her music video way. It was clear from early on that this girl was hedonistic, and Rihanna quickly became the girl all the guys want to do, and the girl all the girls want to do too. Particularly me.

Rihanna quickly became the girl all the guys want to do, and the girl all the girls want to do too.

Part of the appeal, and also part of the controversy that surrounds the Barbadian bombshell is her no-holds-barred attitude towards sex. Rihanna is by no means the first popstar to unashamedly and explicitly express herself using her sexual prowess (aka tits and arse) and she won’t be the last. The difference with Rihanna is the way in which she does it and the platforms she chooses to do it on, this is what gives her an edge. Rihanna’s presence is always mainstream, and it's always unadulterated. Rihanna doesn’t tailor her performances to her audience like some popstars. She doesn't even appear to be held back by her record label. If anything, it's encouraged. If you think you’ll catch her doing a ‘dumbed down’ version of her act wearing a turtle-neck and doing the two-step you'll be disappointed. Rihanna does Rihanna 24/7. This makes her massively popular amongst her fans and massively unpopular amongst her critics.

A prime example of Rihanna doing what she does best was her infamous appearance on the X Factor in the UK in 2010. It caused huge uproar amongst middle England and she was blasted for her highly provocative outfit and raunchy dance routine. It didn't help that her bikini-clad performance was on the same bill as Christina Aguilera’s burlesque performance, in which Aguilera looked like a ropey ol' whore.

Following last year's complaints, this year’s performance was understandably tamer, it is prime time Saturday night TV after all. The reaction on Twitter to Rihanna's understated performance was full of people expressing their surprise at the lack of sex and larger amount of clothing. Rihanna retweeted a number of fans tweets who said they were upset she wasn’t wearing something more revealing, but in true Rihanna style she still had the last laugh. It wasn’t until after the show was aired that it was noted that Rihanna’s boots were emblazoned with ‘Fuck Off’ down the side…  I'm pretty sure she wasn’t wearing any knickers either.

It's clear that Rihanna loves sex, and sex loves her but the most controversial milestone of Rihanna’s career to date was not something sexual, it was the violent altercation between her and her then boyfriend singer, Chris Brown. As they were driving home from a pre-Grammy awards party the couple argued and it ended violently with police being called and a court case soon followed. The furore and intense aftermath that surrounded this was something that gave Rihanna the harder edge that she possesses today. As with all celebrity stories, there were endless speculations surrounding the fight. All that is certain is it did wonders for Rihanna’s career and the opposite for Chris Brown. Rihanna certainly came out fighting.

All the negativity and bad energy created by the situation was channelled and used to skyrocket Rihanna into another level of stardom.  Her next album to be released following the attack was titled ‘Rated R’ and it saw a distinct jump from naughty girl to outright courtesan-hussy. Not only were her clothes often missing, they were now very extreme in their styling and it could be argued that she was playing on the sadomasochistic theme that the Brown fight spurned. For a long time after the Brown attack, everyone pitied Rihanna and global stars gathered round wanting to protect her. She was quick to show through her actions and lyrics, particularly on her track with Eminem, 'Love the way you lie' that she could handle her own business. That it was HER choice to have stayed in a violent relationship and that she had to some extent, got a kick from it. Literally.

Sometimes Rihanna’s sexuality is so out there and explicit that we as the audience are almost desensitized by it.

Now this is not exactly the message you’d want to send out to your kids, but somehow Rihanna gets away with it. She gets away with it largely because she juxtaposes the controversial side with an image of a self-sure female who is fully aware of all that she does, including making her own decisions. The song 'S&M' on her 5th album clearly showed the boundaries that Rihanna can push… she took sex, in face not just sex; a serious kink, wrote about it, acted it out and made it a No.1 hit record. Sometimes Rihanna’s sexuality is so out there and explicit that we as the audience are almost desensitized by it. It’s just so expected now and as this weeks X Factor proved, it’s more shocking if she covers up. It's a similar situation to Lady Gaga and her bonkers outfits; it would be far more shocking to see Gaga in a t-shirt, jeans and Converse than a sanitary towel and a trilby hat made of dandruff.

Rihanna will continue to use sex to sell records because that is who she is, that is the persona she has created. Her latest video, 'We found love' from her new album was filmed under a storm of media coverage due to Rih-Rih getting her tits out in a field in Ireland without permission. Some would of course say this was just spin to get her more coverage in the press, but in all honesty, she just likes getting her tits out. It's clear that because Rihanna represents a hardworking and successful strong-minded-strong-legged female she somehow can get away with almost anything these days. I’d go as far to say as she could film her own sex-tape and use it for a music video. In fact, I’m so confident that will happen I’d like to state now that you heard it here first.

There is no denying that Rihanna releases great pop music but it’s her passion and ballsy attitude that I love. She’s feisty, she loves sex and she oozes fun. She knows she's not going to be able to do this forever so she's working around the clock to do her thing and make her mark on the world of music. I applaud her upfront attitude and I think it’s a shame that not everyone takes her performances in the tongue-in-cheek nature in which they’re delivered. Yes, she does get naked a bit too much, but trust me when I say; if I looked like Rihanna, I'd be walking round naked all day.
