Last night in Ibiza and want to give your ears a rest from the monster beats? These are my 5 suggestions for some of the island's best alternative spots.
As a reaonably successful international travelling DJ I could obviously go on and on about all the super clubs in Ibiza. The differences and the similarities, the good times and the bad, the pretty people and the ugly. But, though I may say the obvious, Ibiza is not all about dancing your head off into the wee hours of the morning. Well almost, but not all, and there are still many alternative music places (some dating back from when Amnesia was merely a nice hippy lady’s back terrace), where you can keep the party going through the day and beyond. (NB: after hours have been forbidden for a few years so as to protect visitors from their early-morning altered judgment and effectively there is a curfew between 6am and 12am soo…
Xa Trinxa (Salinas Beach) – The universal meeting point for Ibiza cool headz. Just a beach bar, at the furtherest end of Ibiza’s main beach Salinas. Good food, good Sangria and good afternoon and sunset vibes vibes courtesy of Jon Sa Trinxa, Franco Moiraghi and other seminal Ibiza DJs.
Blue Marlin (Cala Jondal) – Yes its posh and yes its expensive and anyway you cant even get close to the bar even if you wanted to., but it has a stunning crowd and established a rocking Sunday bash with hot DJs and live flamenco concerts etc. This year check out Kenny Dope on a Tuesday and Kerri Chandler on a renewed Sunday line up.
Las Dalias (Hippy Market – S. Carlos way) – Every Sunday. Live alternative bands in an intimate and super chilled setting. Fishing from local talent and visiting alternative, psychedelic and generally eclectic sounds, Las dalias welcomes all ages for a taste of what Ibiza once was.
Café del Mar (San Antonio “Sunset Strip”) Once globally famous for their chilled out compilations (originally under the care of DJ Jose Padilla) the Café del Mar is the original Sunset spot on the island, but now merely the centre of San Antonio’s infamous Sunset Strip. Stop there or just follow your favourite nearby beat (Mambo / Savannah / etc)
Ibiza Rocks When I am on the Island with the odd day off I invariably end up checking out a gig or two at Ibiza Rocks. Great atmosphere, memorable venue, memorable sets, and a welcome change from the 4 to the floor fare taking you through the night. This year check out their 8th b’day bash with Beady Eye, Zane Lowe and Temples, Biffy Clyro, Chic feat. Nile Rogers, plus Franz Ferdinand, FOALS, Jagwar Ma, Bondax, AlunaGeorge, Example, Katy B, Ellie Goulding, Dizzee Rascal and multiple dates with Example & DJ Wire plus many more.
