2012 may have been the year of the apocalypse but it’s 2013 that see’s an influx of original apocalyptic movies. Zombies, monsters and even M. Night Shyamalan are being thrown at us…

Oblivion (Release date: 12th April) 

Based in the post apocalyptic year of 2073 Tom Cruise is one of the last few drone repairmen working on earth in order to extract resources. The rest of the humans live in sky cities after years of war with enemies known as scavs. Imagine a less than PG version of Wall-E starring the much less loveable Tom Cruise. Based on a graphic novel by the same name it could however give an interesting insight into what living in the skies could be like. The isolated man perspective has been done before but with director Joseph Kosinski in the director’s chair, Oblivion promises to be aesthetically pleasing at the very least.

 

Pacific Rim (Release date: 12th July)

Gigantic monsters appear from a portal in the middle of the Pacific Ocean and attack the Earth. To combat these humans engineer and pilot equally as big robots known as Jaegers. I’m going to go out on a whim and say the story is pretty weak but I have to admit that the former Power Rangers fan within me is a little bit excited. Guillermo del Toro is at the helm and judging by the trailer it does appear to have a Hellboy feel to it. Idris Alba is the only well known name attached to the monster flick.

Warm Bodies (Release date: 8th February)

Ever wondered what a zombie apocalypse is like for the zombies themselves? Nicholas Hoult plays R, a zombie walking around a barren America doing usual zombie things. After attacking a group of humans R falls for the girlfriend of one of his victims. As a result of this new found love R starts to become more and more human. Warm bodies could well be an interesting spin on your average zombie film but it’s unlikely to satisfy the hardcore zombie fans.  Think of it as a rom com that will nearly guarantee your boyfriend’s consciousness during viewing.

 

After Earth (Release date: June 7th)

Father and son combo Will and Jaden Smith team up in M. Night Shyamalan’s post apocalyptic blockbuster. The pair crash land on planet earth 1,000 years after it has been abandoned. The Sarth is inhabited by heavily evolved animals and injured father Cypher (Will Smith) has to rely on his son to complete the dangerous journey of signalling for help. Lady In The Water, The Happening, The Last Airbender, It’s fair to say that M. Night Shyamalan has been on a stinking run these past 7 years. I suppose it’s all down to whether fans want to give him another chance. After Earth certainly looks like it will be a breathtaking spectacle effects wise and it will be interesting to see Jayden Smith step out of his fathers shadow and take the lead.

 

This Is The End (Release date: 28th June)

Hollywood comedy regulars James Franco, Jonah Hill, Seth Rogen, Danny Mcbride, Jay Baruchel and Craig Robinson star in this comedy apocalypse set in LA. The group play fictionalized versions of themselves in what looks to be a free for all dig at their respective careers whilst surviving the end of the world. Rogen himself and Evan Goldberg are handed their directorial debut in what promises to be a film packed with slapstick humour and cheap jibes. Fans of Pineapple Express and Superbad are likely to get on board with the spliced genres.

 

World War Z (Release date: 21st June)

World War Z is stars Brad Pitt as Gerry Lane, a United Nations worker entrusted with searching the globe for information that can stop the zombie outbreak. Judging by the trailer it seems to be a mix of 28 Weeks Later and I am Legend.  Brad Pitt’s Plan B Entertainment bought the rights to the film in 2007 with the original idea of creating a film similar to that of the Bourne trilogy, concentrating on the political issues of such an outbreak.  World War Z opts for what I would call scary zombies i.e. zombies that can run at a decent pace or as the trailer suggests zombies that can topple over buses and climb walls.
