Bacary Sagna: Warding Off Interest From Inter Milan Is Pivotal To Arsenal's Success

Serie A giants Inter Milan have been credited with an interest in the marauding Frenchman following the departure of Maicon, but it's imperative that Arsenal hold onto Sagna if they are to win their first piece of silverware in seven years...

Bacary Sagna is the latest Arsenal player to be upset by the club’s charitable donations to Manchester. It is imperative the Gunners ward off any interest from Inter Milan if they are to achieve success this season.

Arsenal’s stunning start to the season is largely down to their improved defensive capabilities. Steve Bould was promoted from within and as a result; the Gunners have certainly looked far more difficult to breakdown, a statement the likes of Liverpool and Manchester City will testify towards.

The likes of Laurent Koscielny, Per Mertesacker and, perhaps more importantly, Carl Jenkinson following the enforced absence of the usual guaranteed starter; Bacary Sagna. The Frenchman is yet to make an appearance for Arsenal this campaign having broken his leg for a second time during the final home game of last season against Norwich City.

Sagna initially broke his leg during last season’s 2-1 defeat to rivals Tottenham Hotspur in October and without him, it’s no surprise the Gunners. While he was out, particularly in the first month of 2012 as they shipped seven league goals during three successive beatings as he watched from the sidelines.

Above all the former Auxerre man brings fantastic fitness, classy crossing and a determination and desire to succeed

‘Bac’, as he is known to team-mates, was still finding his form as Arsenal went out of the F.A. Cup at Sunderland and Milan took a four goal lead in the Champions League two-legger. However he played a crucial role in the steadying of the Emirates ship since for the remainder of the campaign as the Gunners surged to a third place finish.

Above all the former Auxerre man brings fantastic fitness, classy crossing and a determination and desire to succeed to the side that is conspicuous by its absence when he is not part of the eleven.

Sagna sparked Arsenal’s memorable comeback in the 5-2 win against Spurs with a thundering header that flashed past Brad Friedel. His was the first goal in an incredible 30 minute salvo that saw the home side fire a quintet past their bitter local rivals.

In the next game it was Bac’s peach of a cross against Liverpool that allowed Van Persie the opportunity to level the scores, in a game which Arsenal ‘nicked’ in stoppage time, according to their captain. The Gunners were not caught for the theft however, and returned to Highbury and Islington with two wins from two in the league, reinvigorated with belief.

Fully committed to the cause but uninterested in confrontation or aggression

The Frenchman played his part in the defence that blocked out Milan during the 3-0 return leg of the Champions League at the Emirates. It wasn’t enough to see his side progress, but it was becoming clearer with every game how influential he was to an often unreliable back line.

Last season’s 2-1 win over Newcastle saw the father-of-two produce a more attacking performance, excellently winning a flick on header to set away Theo Walcott early on, whose cross for Van Persie went begging.

Arsenal went behind to the Geordie outfit after a brilliant individual effort from countryman Hatem Ben Afra, but 45 seconds later Sagna was driving his side’s equaliser, urgently moving the ball up field for Thomas Rosicky to play in Walcott, who crossed for RVP again. This time the Dutchman made sure, bringing the game back to 1-1.

Vermaelen made it four league comebacks in four in the 95th minute of stoppage time, sending the crowd wild with an enthralling finish to the game.

After the match ugly scenes marred a spectacular ending, as RVP clashed with fellow Dutchman Tim Krul. As things began to turn nasty, Sagna could be seen shouting at his team-mates to walk away and avoid any unnecessary handbags.

That sums Bacary up as a player and a person. Fully committed to the cause but uninterested in confrontation or aggression, the Gunners’ best right back since Lee Dixon is a model professional and one that the club missed greatly during his time on the treatment table earlier in the season.

Sagna could be seen shouting at his team-mates to walk away and avoid any unnecessary handbags

With 32 international caps for Les Blues, Sagna would have been guaranteed a place in Laurent Blanc’s Euro 2012 squad had he not suffered the aforementioned leg break against the Canaries.  The Sens born defender was left out of the French team’s surprising 2-1 win over Germany back in February, but was expected to play a big part in the Poland and Ukraine championships over the summer after getting back to his best form with Arsenal.

Sagna is quite clearly his country’s most senior right-back, and it is often suggested that he is the best player in his position in the Premier League.

Whilst you would be hard pressed to find many right sided full-backs better than Bac, Micah Richards’ red hot form this season for title challengers Manchester City would certainly give Arsenal’s number three a run for his money.

Aside from Richards, most of the field pale in comparison however. Liverpool’s Glen Johnson, Tottenham’s Kyle Walker and Chelsea’s Branislav Ivanovic probably come closest, but Sagna’s abilities defensively and offensively dwarf the competition.

Bacary Sagna is a key component of this rejuvenated and reinvigorated Arsenal side, and he deserves praise for his invaluable contribution to the Gunners’ recent success and it is no surprise that Inter Milan have been credited with an interest in the 29-year-old.

The Milan outfit, despite the acquisition of Alvaro Pereira, will be looking for an experienced full-back to fill the void that Maicon, who departed for Manchester City, has left. With Sagna contemplating his future at the Emirates, Inter will be desperate to convince the Frenchman that his future lies in Italy.

However, if Arsenal are to push on from their excellent start to the season, they will need to keep hold of the 29-year-old. Granted, he may be sidelined at present, but Sagna’s calming influence in the back-line is exactly what the Gunners will need as the season drags on. Warding off the interest from Inter will be pivotal by the time the transfer window re-opens. The best way to do that will be for the north London giants to continue progressing this campaign and establish themselves as genuine title contenders once again.

Definitely the best in the league (possibly Europe) and one of our most underrated players. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zmkh4qKeWmI

glad you bring this to light i constantly try to remind people of just how good this guy is but he seems to go unnoticed. arsenal have a formidable back line on paper but they can't seem to stay healthy long enough to mesh as a unit. if they do, and add a couple attacking players they will have a solid bunch.

DM 12:24 pm, 15-Mar-2012

100% accurate, always said it. Bacary Sagna: Mr Consistent

Farmer John 12:31 pm, 15-Mar-2012

Deluded gooners

maturks 12:43 pm, 15-Mar-2012

He loves the club too. Gooner for life.

Oh, Reginald! 1:07 pm, 15-Mar-2012

'Best right back in the premier league'?! obvious troll is obvious

Gil 2:08 pm, 15-Mar-2012

Bacary Sagna is a great right back but he isn't the best right back since Lee Dixon. People forget how great Lauren Etame Mayer was for us. What a shame though. I rate Bac but Lauren was just magnificent. Dribble, cross, tackle, he had it all. You people live too much in the present.

yogavo 2:25 pm, 15-Mar-2012

kyle walker is a better full back. but sagna is pretty good.

yogavo 5:08 pm, 15-Mar-2012

lauren? LAUREN?!!! are you kidding me? he was part of a great team but he wasn't a great player. in fact he was a cheat. i remember watching him stand on the post while arsenal were defending a corner, i cannot remember who the opposition were but they scored from the corner, the ball went past lauren, when he could have blocked it, instead he chose to point at someone to shift the blame. he's a cheat. and sagna is miles better than lauren.

Pace, intelligence, ethic, cool

Stephen Jay 10:46 am, 16-Mar-2012

yea possibly the best. Although I'd still root for Branislav Ivanovic or Walker.

Phil 4:01 pm, 16-Mar-2012

Micah Richards.

Dan 6:25 pm, 20-Mar-2012

Bacary is the best in the league. Kyle Walker maybe quicker but he's crap in the air. Micah Richards is stronger but he's sluggish and too rigid to be a full back(he's a young Sol Cambell). Capello thought he was crap. Glen Johnson is good all round but very thick(Kyle Walker is a God send for the National team. Sagna is a rock in the air, got 2 good feet, vision and at 29 he has experience.

I don't support Arsenal but from their games I've seen he easily beats all the names you ppl have given me. Walker is overated- He is just a better attacker than Sagna. Richards can't make it into his national team lineup. Glen Johnson defensively isn't better then Sagna. Sagna can both attack and defend very well and all these spurs fans really need to think twice about walker. I'm not saying these people I've listed are bad but you cant say they're better than sagna.

Sagna is okay and a nice guy but overrated and personally I think we could do better. He's reasonably solid but I've seen him get turned over by speedy wingers quite often and his crossing is average at best. He's a decent player but very replaceable, if he wants to leave it's not that big a deal in my opinion. I'm guessing I'm in the minority judging by the comments here but that's just what i think watching him at Emirates for the past 4 years.

Skin Ed 4:11 pm, 6-Sep-2012

Interesting to note that he's waited until after the transfer window's closed to display the same attitude that saw Steve Bould lose his rag with Alex Song. But wait, he can do what he wants, he's the last surviving player from the team of '07, and we'd better ready a plinth in the carpark for a statue or two, because that team is up there with 1933, '71, '89, '98 and 2004 in terms of quality and silverware, aren't they? Oh, wait... The fact is, Carl Jenkinson has done enough in the first three games of the season to warrent an extended run in the team (at least until we can sign some cover for him in January), and at The Arsenal, we don't wash our dirty linen in public. That's what Sp*rs and Chelski do. Baracy who?

Sgt Pilko 2:41 pm, 25-Sep-2012

Sagna is a very accomplished right back, but i watched him get absolutely torn to shreds by Victor Moses in the home defeat against Wigan last season... Corporal Jenkinson has come on leaps and bounds this season and deserves to keep his starting place for the time being...

WorldBull 4:25 pm, 25-Sep-2012

Excellent defender and always shown the club a lot of respect in the past. I worry that as he has had two broken legs within 18 months, will he be as quick?

Butrus 4:51 pm, 25-Sep-2012

Perfect player, very discipline. Sorry Wenger will let him go just like Song. He love the Club but... I don't trust Arsenals transfer policies
