Eljero Elia: What Liverpool Need To Know About The Juventus Winger

Dutch midfielder Eljero Elia has had a torrid time at Juventus since signing from Hamburg and has now confirmed he wants to leave the club. Liverpool and Newcastle are reportedly interested.
As the rest of the Juventus squad were revelling in winning the Serie A title one player cut a lonely figure and must have wondered if he actually merited a winners’ medal.
Eljero Elia took out his frustrations at being marginalised in what should have been a triumphant year in the spot-light in a candid interview with Dutch daily Algemeen Dagblad where he basically called on potential suitors to come and get and him.
“I want out of here because I don’t feel like a regular,” lamented the winger. Well, there is no denying that statement.
Juve coach Antonio Conte gave the 10million euro signing from Hamburg a grand total of one start all season and that came back in late September at Catania where even then the Holland international only lasted 45 minutes before being replaced by the more experienced and eager Simone Pepe.
Things were to rapidly go downhill for the 25-year-old who managed a further three appearances from the substitutes’ bench for a grand total of 95 minutes in the league – and even then so badly was his confidence shaken that in the his last outing in the 4-0 win at Novara, he managed to miss two presentable chances when left one-on-one with the goalkeeper.
Serie A is an unforgiving environment for those who fail to make an instant impact or cannot sustain a positive start as another redundant wide-man at the club Milos Krasic has found to his cost.
However, it looked as if Elia was tailor-made for Conte’s original game plan which was to play two wingers providing service for two out and out strikers in an adventurous 4-2-4 line-up but when the coach decided that those in wide positions needed to track back then he was never going to get the best out of the new man.
He possesses the trickery to cut in from the left and his pace and energy would be enough to worry any defence
With another new signing Mirko Vucinic given a free role in attack, Conte could not afford another maverick in the side especially as Andrea Pirlo needed willing runners in the shape of Arturo Vidal, Emanuele Giaccherini, Marcelo Estigarriba or Claudio Marchisio in midfield – with each capable of playing out wide even if not all possessed dazzling close control.
A further switch, with the employment of two wing-backs saw Elia pushed further down the pecking order and as Fabio Quagliarella returned to form after a long-term injury and Alessandro Del Piero made fleeting cameo appearances so any chance of securing a position through the middle of the attack receded.
It is not as if Elia is not good enough for Serie A but he happened to join a team chock-full of quality midfielders and attackers that as the season progressed found the perfect system to land the title.
Currently under contract until 2016, he could yet play a part in Juve’s future especially if Conte where to tinker once more with his formation and one could see Elia flourish out wide in a 4-2-3-1 line-up.
Although predominantly right-footed he possesses the trickery to cut in from the left and his pace and energy would be enough to worry any defence. Unfortunately, when given a rare chance to show off his talents he has just failed by a whisker to leave his mark.
Novara was one such occasion but so was the Italian Cup quarter-final where he was only given four minutes with the Bianconeri cruising to victory but still managed to fluff a good chance which otherwise may have persuaded Conte that he count on a tormentor of defenders to come on and cause havoc.
It wasn’t to be but that is not to say that such skill and talent cannot flourish in a new environment.

The player has talent and would be a low risk signing imo - I would like Liverpool to buy him, but going on recent trends it is much more likely that he will end up at the Sports Direct Arena, or whatever the place is called now. Oh well - Liverpool will start looking for flair players again one day...
Can't see either team buying him. Liverpool will stick with their wingers and the comment of the player not likely to track back should put Newcastle off.
Paul...Tracking back is something that can be rectified with players. As it has with Ben Arfa who at one point didnt look like he would break a sweat in a game. I think this could be a decent move, we have already looked at him before Juventus and he seems keen to play. But would need to be at a financial loss to Juventus as they cant surely expect to sell him at anywhere near the price they bought him for.
Liverpool don't have any aggressive wingers though. That's the point. Maxi is as good as gone, Bellamy is 33, and Downing is orthodox and not a regular. Elia stated his preference was to join Liverpool last season, it's a club he'd suit. The possession based game they play would benefit him, as would the movement. What would also benefit him is the extensive ball work that Liverpool do in training sessions, more often than not wingers like Elia struggle under Italian coaches because of the high conditioning and tactical work they do which limits time with the ball. No matter how good a player is you can tell over the course of the season which side does extensive ball work because they look better technically. With Elia you could model the reserve team set up as well, a 4231 with inverted wide men, which created a flow throughout the system at the club.
The problem Liverpool could have is the fact that if we get Champions League football it doesn't matter about a clubs 'history' Newcastle will be able to give him games against the best in the world. Liverpool won't.
Paul - Downing is the only winger that we have at Liverpool atm, and he clearly isn't good enough to be depended on to do anything for us. I agree with Irv though - this whole tracking back thing has become so over-rated in recent years. Every winger doesn't have to spend so much time in his own half like your Jonas does. As long as they cover off the opposite fullback to prevent doubling up on his full back, then that will do just fine for me, and if he doesn't defend sufficiently then this can be taught. When it comes to pace and technical ability though, either a player has it or he doesn't. And Elia has it.
jayden@ haha Newcastle won't get champions league football and certainly won't finish ahead of Liverpool again that was just a fluke season where everything went wrong for Liverpool and with Liverpool new attacking total football style all good young technical players will want to come play at Anfield, similar to Arsenal when they weren't winning anything they could still attract top young players because they know they could settle in the prem easier playing in a stylish team that creates lots of chances with great passing and keeps the ball on the ground unlike Newcastle who hoof it up to their giant strikers like Stoke.
@Patrick? Hoof ball? Erm what toon game did you watch in the season? The Liverpool squad is shocking. Rodgers isnt going to make instant impact its going to be 2 years of graft to get them going anywhere because the money thats previously been spent has pretty much been wasted. The players in your squad are a mixed bag of systems rather than one vision/style of play which lets face it last season was non existent. Newcastles game pretty much got better throughout the season apart from the last game where our legs just died and also against City. Our fixture layout in the final games beat us due to Chelseas commitments meaning we had jammed games compared to our opposition. Newcastle stock around europe at the moment is quite high due to all the praise our players are giving, the coverage in france and the commitments of players the last few days stating they are going nowhere like Cisse, Krul, Colo, Tiote, Ben Arfa and Cabaye. They are all happy and want to stay and other players are hearing that. Elia wanted to come to Newcastle in January but couldnt due to rules unfortunately. Elia is far more likely to end up at the Toon at this stage that Liverpool. League tables never lie thats a fact and currently between the clubs there is a big gap Liverpool need to fill as the league has gotten far more competitive. Liverpool havent stood still they've gone backwards.
@patrick Newcastle more likely to get champions league than Liverpool at the moment. Don't just go spouting stuff like that. Also, Liverpool and flair you're having a laugh! Which young players want to come to Liverpool?
We don't need solomon kalou.i beg pls buy elijano Elia or Ryan boudebouz for us elia is good winger he play in line ..skillful.dribble.speed.stronge.crossing.passing.fast startistic.ynwa ELIA is so far pls get him" we never lose again
James@ That's just your guess though, Liverpool could hit the ground running nobody knows at this point, could go either way. I do think Rodgers is a fantastic manager and it certainly won't take to long before Liverpool are a force again.. You're right about Liverpool squad being a mixed bag of systems Kenny didn't really know much about building a squad just tried to fit everything in a once so I don't think Liverpool have a bad team they obviously should've done better than what they did last season and Rodgers seems to know what he's doing.. On the Eljero Elia subject he was begging Liverpool to take him last season and to be honest I don't even think he's good enough for Liverpool he'd probably end up like our last Dutch winger Ryan B. so Newcastle can have him.. Newcastle passed it a bit in the midfield but 80% of the time Newcastle are only effective when the ball is in the air because you've a team of giants so I'm positive a good young technical player will pick Liverpool over Newcastle but maybe only after this season so they can see the attacking passing football Liverpool try to play, if Liverpool play like Swansea with the better players we have that could be the start of something special indeed especially with the Anfield crowd behind the team, it's up to Rodgers to get them behind him though. But I will say things are looking good for both Newcastle and Liverpool right now and there hasn't been this much excitement for a new season to begin from both teams in ages..
Notlob@ Liverpool were in two finals last year don't forget that and it was Liverpool's worst season in 50 years that's the difference between Liverpool and Newcastle if Newcastle had Liverpool's season the Toon would've been over the moon with joy..And you'll seen the style Rodgers will bring to Anfield will excite fans and players from all over the world so getting young talented player won't be difficult..And will Newcastle be able to live up to last season I don't think so mid-table finish I reckon..
Eljero Elia will be mostwelcome at anfield.he will surely get plenty of time to play at liverpool as they still search replacement for kyut.
Its funny because he is going to Bremen
its even funnier hes off to Fulham coyw
Yeh, Fulham, who finished a point or so behind you toby's last season. :-)
