Liverpool Fans Should Get Behind Roberto Martinez
He may not be Dalglish and he may not be box office but the Wigan boss is a young, intelligent manager who knows how to spot young talent and play good football.

Liverpool fans need a reality check and Roberto Martinez is a good choice. He’s not box office, he’s not Fabio Capello, he’s certainly not Jose Mourinho, but you only have to look at the league table to see that we have gone from being regulars in the ‘Big Four’ with two Champions Leagues finals in two years, to being a top six, top eight team.
We need a manager who is cheap (so NOT Capello) and who has an excellent scouting network that can unearth some gems from Europe and South America. Martinez did it at Swansea (he discovered Angel Rangel in the Spanish second division and he is now a regular Premiership player) and at Wigan. Given how much money Kenny Dalglish blew on Carroll, Downing and Henderson I can’t imagine the new manager will have a lot of money to play with so someone like Martinez is ideal. Given his restrictions at Wigan he has performed miracles to keep them in the Premier League.
OK so he has no experience at handling ‘big’ players but how ‘big’ are Liverpool’s players these days? His personality and knowledge of the game are massive plus points. The players will hopefully be open and receptive to a new, young, intelligent manager and his teams also play good, entertaining football. I hope Liverpool fans get over the sacking of Dalglish, move on and get behind Martinez if he is appointed. Once he has a chance to settle Liverpool must then address the issue of getting a new stadium. Until that issue is resolved, Martinez or whoever else is appointed, doesn’t have a chance of returning us to the top four.

Really?, are you a Wigan fan?, if so, that is undestandable, if not, continue to watch cricket!.
Boss, clearly yu don't who liverpool are. Its' the fans who make the players big.Sure Martinez might be agood coach but fighting relegation aint sth yu can talk abt as an achievement.& yu think beating Utd,arsenal is a really big achievement boss what's his record in all his campaigns?has qualified any team to the next level?say championship to premier league or say whats his record in say cup competitions?Yu cant say ohh, bcoz he was at a small team he dint win any thing cardiff city fc were at the league cup final.Atltico bilbao knocked out Utd in uefa cup & they had a younger & less skilled team. Its about winning, stupid. What has he won?
we pay are money we are allowed are views, martinez is not good enough. how can anyone sack kenny for him? what as he ever done? hodgson has a good brain too were did it get him at liverpool? nope the owners be it on there heads if the give martinez the job. they do not know what there doing, and there advisor lol he should be sacked. there a joke no matter how you dress it up anyone with half a brain knows martinez is the wrong man. if they give him job when he fails, will they leave?
keep him at wigan
He got swansea promoted and set up the foundations for brendan rodgers to come in and take them too the prem. He has wigan playing incredible footy with a poor team. Wigan only finished 9 points behind us in the league. People say he has no experience managing big players. So. Did klopp before he managed Dortmund Mourinhio started off at small clubs so did benitez before he went valenecia. The list goes on pep guardiola took straight over at barca despite no management experience. Roy hodgson had lots of experiThis is the man who will take us back to the top and when he's appointed i hope everyone get's behind him or if not go support Everton.
I agree with the article main points and think that who ever becomes the new manager the fans should be one hundred percent behind them. It is all about supporting the club. One of the contributing factors to RH downfall was the negative response from the fans. Forget this thinking that it is our club as it is not it is FSG's. They paid the money so they can do what they like. If you love your club then support it 100% as negativity from the croud affects the players. But then I foubt if you really attend any games.
Liverpool football club are in the position they’re in today (no league titles in 20+ years) because of people like Red, Eric Chege, Rouman and tony! Backward! I’m surprised you’re on the internet due to your fear to embrace anything new! In the 60s, 70s and 80s Liverpool football clubs success was built on being ahead of the curve! A club which was innovative and forward thinking. At that time the boot-room was the secret and the open debate between those great football minds fuelled that success and was something that no other club had done or knew how to do as well as LFC. Oh the halcyon days you all long for! FSG are trying to drag our club (kicking and screaming by the sound of the tripe you’ve served) into the 21st century. A modern forward thinking football club which other clubs want to copy once again. Our club needs restructuring from top to bottom! Moores brings in Souness and gets it wrong. Moores brings in Evans and gets it wrong. Moores brings in Houllier and gets it wrong. Moores brings in Rafa and gets it wrong then sells to cowboys and gets it really wrong. That’s 21 years and unless you’ve not been keeping up with current event (or not really paying attention) IS the LIVERPOOL WAY!!! We have been mismanaged for 21 years and you’re criticizing FSG for wanting to change the last 21 years of mismanagement. There’s your man at the top (Moores)! Shocking. FSG offer a modern plan. With a modern structure and an approach which will afford the club continuity and consistency no matter who the manager is. Before Rafa Benitez made a name for himself at Valencia were was he and what had he done? From 1995 to 2001 he was at 5 clubs Real Valladolid 1996–1997 Osasuna1997–1999 Extremadura 2000–2001 Tenerife. Achieving little more than promotion an relegation in that time and then Valencia gave him his chance and we all know what happened. Before Pep Guardiola made a name for himself at Barcelona were was he and what had he achieved! Barcelona B team 2007-2008. That’s it. Before Jurgen Klopp made a name for himself at Dortmund were was he and what had he achieved? 2001–2008 1. FSV Mainz 05. 7 years of relegation and promotion qualifying for Europe once. If, and it is by no means certain martinez gerts the job then Liverpool should be applauded.
You really are funny!
SueRed...........Now, when I snap my fingers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.
Thank you, Neil and thank you SuaRed! I think we should focus on supporting our club and unless there is a clear known reason we need to bring to FSG's attention, we should stop putting unnecessary pressure on the owners! By the way, there are enough LFC detractors who want to fan the flames of discord and create confusion and we should not fall for that or create an opening for those who cannot stand LFC's glttering history!
Red??? Your second comment is about as intelligent and enlightening as your first....Huxleys infinite monkey theorem comes to mind! Look it up!
'Red' - for the record I am a Liverpool fan. 'Eric Chege' - "it's the fans that make the players big" - WTF, how deluded are you?
Well said SuaRed. You have just restored my faith in Liverpool supporters. I was beginning to get very disillusioned with the majority of comments coming from our own fans. It is getting embarassing at this stage. They must have crystal balls if they already know that Martinez definitely won't cut it. If any of you lads want to forward me next weeks Lottery numbers, it will be much appreciated.
@ Neil, remember these names leivas,Crouch,Garcia they dint start heir anfield careers with goals or even assists bt they ended up heroes. All i'm saying no one comes to Anfield with boots strapped on.As for Sua Red I hope yu've bought your season tickets cause thats best thing yu'll hav done LFC next season.Personally I vouch for Rafa bt Ian Ayre wil never want to face that ghost again.Truth is FSG hav a lot to learn abt english football. As for not winning for premiership for 20+,yu're right unwillingness to get the best is what landed us that trophy drought. However if playing good football is what is Martinez is all about then we are in big trouble.Under KD we played some great football but of course there were games we switched off.I am unconvinced that martinez will give us the results we crave.Simply put what has he won?
SuaRed.....On one condition,.....only, if it means waking YOU up, from your COMATOSE state!.
SuaRed........'Moores brings in Rafa and gets it wrong'?,are YOU for REAL?, TWO European Cup finals. GO BACK TO YOUR COMATOSE STATE,cause with comment's like that, you obviously knows FA about football!!!
Neil Billingham.......We don't need F morons, like you as Liverpool fans!.
You mean like they got behind Hodgson? Who incidentally, was only five points behind Dalglish with West Brom but with £100Million pounds less to spend.
Red. Is that the best you can do - just dish out abuse? Well done, you've really contributed to the debate, very intellectual indeed
let kenny go was a big mistake but guys for the sake of working forward we should just support who every comes in. what liverpool needs are new fresh players not coaches #YNWA #BORNREDDIERED
If he does come it's a manager of the month appointment, if Dalglish had gone last Xmas his name wouldnt have even come up. Likewise, if Dalglish had gone next Xmas he wouldnt have come up, because he'd be in or around the bottom 3 after a trademark terrile start. Give him a chance yeah but dont expect wonders
WOW!!! Red you're an idiot! You've contributed nothing to this debate! Did we win the league under Rafa? NO that is the marker for a great side. Yes Istanbul was a great occasion for the club but the league is the marker. Chelski have just won the Champions League but are they a great side? No. After 6 years under Rafa we never won the league and that was his remit when he came. It may not all of been Rafas fault and maybe he should of had more support but he didn't help himself throughout his time at LFC and his race has run. We now have a chance to create a structure and install a manager in place giving him support and the best opportunity to succeed. I'm all for that. Anyway before we all go on a tangent you all might want to ease up because here in Liverpool I'm hearing that Martinez was not offered the managers job but a lesser role. Dave (motor mouth) Whelan actually said "Liverpool have made him an offer" he never said the offer was the managers job. The manager elect is in fact somebody who ticks all the boxes and has just recently won a league title! Watch this space!
He only had a good last 10 games of the season that's all people remember. What about the first 30 odd games Wigan were horrible to watch. But you never know gamble could pay off.
Colin: people trot out the "Look where Hodgson finished with West Brom argument" all the time but it's where he looked like he was going to finish with us that got him the sack. Dalglish never saw us in the bottom three, but the boiled owl did. We supported him until it was clear he didn't have what it took and he he made some wegwettable comments in the pwess. Martinez will be given time by the true support. People do respect his ability and not many can say he doesn't come across well in the media. He's not my first choice, but we'll get behind him.
SuaRed....'Did we win the league under Rafa? NO that is the marker for a great side'??, you say, NOT ACCORDING TO KING KENNY, right?. Nough said.
What's this discussion got to do with Dalglish? Where in this argument...sorry discussion have I referenced Dalglish as supporting evidence in anything I've said? You Red are a dolt! Nough...sorry enough said!!! About what? What is your point? Come on please enlighten everybody with your deep insight into our football club? Exactly...it basic and nonsensical! get back on your Xbox son! Championship manager awaits...
SuaRed.....Eh, what?, was'nt you that 'The league was and quote 'is the marker for a great side'??,so according to Dalglish, you are totally wrong, I suggest you try and Google it!, you might learn something!!. Son?, for your info, SuaRed I have been a LFC supporter well before you started, shitting in your nappy............Oops, I said it now.
