Olivier Giroud: Why Arsenal Should Snap Up The Montpelier Striker

Arsenal have been linked to signing Montpelier's superstar striker who is so much more than a target man. Here's everything you need to know.

Everything Arsenal Need To Know About €15m Olivier Giroud

If you are one of the few sometimes casting a glance at the ligue 1 table you probably noticed that a club very much unfancied at the start of the season is currently fighting for the top spot with the bookmakers’ favourite PSG.

This side is Montpellier, promoted in 2008, having a very important youth development policy and trying to be smarter than any when it comes to investing the few euros they have to play about with.

Currently one point behind the free-spending Parisians, they have been propelled there by star striker Olivier Giroud. The 25 years old striker is in the form of his life. He’s already scored 17 in the league  positioning himself as the current top scorer, and scored his first international goal for France last week.

I can already hear the sceptics saying that if he is still at a low profile French club like Montpellier at 25, he probably isn’t worth a Premier League career. He could prove you wrong.

He was born in the Alps, an area of France that is low on football history. It’s no surprise then to see him beginning his career in Grenoble FC, the only decent option nearby. Sadly, he never gained the coach’s confidence and decided to move away, aged 21.

Three years, two clubs and 52 goals later, he finally caught the eye of a few scouts. In January 2010 he openly declined an offer from Glasgow Celtic, only to sign for Montpellier days later. The deal worth a tiny €2M was including a clause allowing him to stay on loan for the rest of the season at his previous club then fighting for promotion. (Loyalty you said?) He failed to secure promotion for Tours FC but still managed to grab the top scorer and best player award that season.

The word was spreading amongst fans and professionals that this guy was as good as the stats were saying. During his first season he scored 12 goals and led Montpellier to an expected mid-table finish and a cup final.

Since then, and helped by his club’s form, positive reports about him are flowing through the French media. At 6’3” and 14.5 stone, he is as good in the air as you would expect, but he is much more than a target man. He is very mobile and shows a good ability with the ball. He can thus be as comfortable paired with another forward as he can be on his own, and from set pieces to counter attack, he has scored an array of different goals already this season.

Olivier Giroud and Solomon Kolo to replace Chamakh, Bendtner, Park and Carlos Vela will be the most economically feasible deal for Arsene Wenger. Giroud will only cost 12.5 million pounds and with Chamakh being used in the deal, Wenger will only have to pay 6-8 million pounds. Kolo will be signed on a free transfer. Wenger will be able to redeem at least 8 million pounds from the sales of Bendtner and Vela as Dortmond and Real. Except for Park Ju Young, Wenger may encounter difficult in finding a suitor. The capture of Kolo and Giroud, the Arsenal will have 4 established strikers at their disposal. This wll make them much more potent in attack compared to last season.

Sign him and Dempsey, keep RVP and sell all other strikers. Then our problems up front are solved. Front four to choose from of RVP, Giroud, Podolski and Dempsey looks pretty good.
