Cardiff City Half-Term Report: Hail King Malky

Robin Van Persie: 4 Strikers To Replace Arsenal's Contract Rebel

by Ben James
4 July 2012 20 Comments

RVP is off, citing irreconcilable differences like he's a bloody rock star. If he's going to go, then Wenger needs to splash out on one of these to replace him...

Robin Van Persie has said that he won’t sign a new contract for Arsenal because he disagrees with what he sees as a lack of progression. Arsenal will need to sell quick, so here are four strikers who Arsene Wenger may be tempted by, all of whom would be available for under the £20m mark.

Seydou Doumbia – CSKA Moscow – 23

Seydou Doumbia is in the form of his life. With 23 goals in 30 games in the Russian Premier League, the Ivorian has proved a handful for opposition defences. Not only is he quick and athletic, but he also has power and physicality in abundance. With the poor form of Marouane Chamakh, Arsenal are lacking an effective aerial threat up front. Doumbia would provide that. Arsene Wenger may be even more tempted by the fact he’d be able to link up with fellow Ivorian International Gervinho. The Russian League may not be notorious for its world class standards, yet his goal return of 29 in 41 has given CSKA every chance of qualifying for the Champions League again next season. Regardless of the league he plays in, he clearly is a natural goalscorer. A January move is unlikely due to his participation in the African Nations Cup, but should the worst happen and Van Persie leave Arsenal, Wenger may be tempted by the African forward. Whilst Doumbia is not of Van Persie’s quality – in fairness very few are – he would be a good addition to the Arsenal squad.

Leandro Damiao – Internacional – 22

Wenger’s record with Brazilians has been somewhat hit and miss. Gilberto Silva and Edu were vital cogs in the title winning Invincibles side in 04-05 but Denilson and Julio Baptista failed to live up to expectations while in North London. However, Leandro Damiao is a Brazilian whose samba flair could be welcomed with open arms at The Emirates. In terms of Brazilian football, Damiao is somewhat over-shadowed by the over-hyped Neymar, but under the radar, Damiao has consistently kept the level of his game high. With 14 goals in 28 appearences for Internacional, he helped fire them to a sixth placed finish in The Brasileirao. Arsenal would face competition for the forward from a number of Europe’s big names. At just 22, the technically gifted striker would be a great signing for a host of elite clubs and despite the young age he can already be considered a ‘Complete Forward’. With bags of pace, plenty of power and an eye for goal, Damiao would be a great replacement for Robin Van Persie and could lead The Gunners front line for years to come.

The ideal scenario would to bring in any of the above players whilst Van Persie stays, but whether Wenger will do that and whether anyone would be prepared to play second fiddle to the Dutchman, is another question

Roberto Soldado – Valencia – 26.

It’s been a stop-start career for Roberto Soldado. After failing to fulfil his promise as a youngster at Real Madrid, the striker was pushed down the pecking order at The Bernabeu as global superstars signed multi-million deals with the Spanish giants. His fantastic record as a Real Madrid B player wasn’t emulated whilst in the first team and in 2008, Soldado signed for Getafe. After two successful seasons with Getafe, he made a switch to Valencia in a €10m move. Since then, Soldado has repaid every penny in goals. With 9 goals in 15 games this season and 29 in 50 since his move, Soldado seems to finally be living up to his early potential. If his good form continues, it’s expected that he will lead the line for Spain at next summers European Championships, due to the injury to David Villa. Technically, he’s better than the other four players on this list. His movement is top class and he’s a big game player, as his brace against former side Real Madrid earlier this season showed. He’d be a pricier option, but at 26, the Spaniard has bags of experience and in Arsene Wenger’s new look side, he could thrive.

Luuk De Jong – FC Twente – 21

As Wenger’s record with Dutch players goes, it’s a pretty good one. His forages into the Dutch player market have seen him pluck out some of the best the Premier League has seen. Not only Robin Van Persie who is currently one of the worlds best players, but also flying winger Marc Overmars was played the best football of his career for Wenger. Given this record, may Arsene Wenger be tempted to delve into the Dutch market once again for one of Holland’s most wanted properties? Luuk De Jong has only emerged in recent seasons and is currently on fantastic form. 9 goals in 11 league games for FC Twente has seen his named linked with some of Europe’s elite. Despite being 21, he’s already made six senior appearances for the Netherlands, scoring a single goal. The youngster has bags of potential and his athleticism, work rate and technical ability make him a perfect fit for Arsenal. Despite Wenger’s recent signings being more experienced and proven, we know the Frenchman loves to nurture a young talent and make him a world beater. Could De Jong be the next jewel in his crown?

Robin Van Persie is a special talent and Arsene Wenger will be praying he holds onto his prized asset, but should he leave, Arsenal fans can live safe in the knowledge that quality replacements do exist. There are players who can come in and give Arsenal an extra dimension and really bolster the squad. The ideal scenario would to bring in any of the above players whilst Van Persie stays, but whether Wenger will do that and whether anyone would be prepared to play second fiddle to the Dutchman, is another question. Arsenal fans may worry that Wenger won’t make a big money, big name signing to replace his captain, but the names above show that big money isn’t necessary. Wenger is notoriously shrewd in the transfer market and signing any of the above would give further confirmation of that.

Can we play them all at once

Francis Angrey 2:33 pm, 20-Dec-2011

Fine. It'll be good if AW can go for any of those strikers.

Bongo_Boy 3:12 pm, 20-Dec-2011

John Guidetti, Feyenoord (on loan from Man City where he'll never get a chance...)

Tony mc 5:24 pm, 20-Dec-2011

In reply to the loan of Guidetti from City this is a practice that should be banned no loan between premiership clubs Look at the advantage spurs have got and tehre not paying the wages of Abadeyor and he's not allowed to play against Man City makes a unfair playing field

Garang Ngony 9:50 am, 21-Dec-2011

keep Robin and bring Poldoski

JR 1:18 pm, 21-Dec-2011

Podolskli only plays good when playing for germany, look at his bayern and koln records- both atrocious.

ROFOOF 12:14 pm, 10-Feb-2012

If we lose RvP, Cavani would be a perfect replacement but more likely we will get an unknown player from the French league who will not settle and be given as much time as needed by Wenger

Jo 12:35 pm, 10-Feb-2012

Guidetti is City's hands off peeps

Jo 12:38 pm, 10-Feb-2012

I know some arsenal fans don't like Adebyour not being able to play City but everyone else he does then its just sour grapes ...Arsenal makes their fans pay 1000 pounds fir season ticket but never spends once in a while like marquee but the share holders Only want the money nothing else.

Matthew 1:09 pm, 10-Feb-2012

JR!?.. If podoldki's 15 goals in 18 games in a team that create half as many chances as arsenal are 'atrocious' he's worth the risk. IDIOT. Believes what he reads in the papers

Mitch 6:03 pm, 4-Jul-2012

If rvp wants to move on then fine, as long as we spend as much money as we get for him on a proven striker. But will we? No.

ArsenalisYourDaddy 6:08 pm, 4-Jul-2012

Bull manure Robin, it is the CASH MONEY! You know where you are going. We are not fools. Wenger kept you when you were crocked and crocked and crocked. Have a good life! the $30 million will buy us a another striker!

Jack 6:24 pm, 4-Jul-2012

Screw RVP don't want him here if he thinks he's to good for my beloved Arsenal FC, sell him bring in Llorente or Huntelaar to replace him, Also get Lloris, Vertorghen, M'Vila and Dempsey in then were sorted

Jj 6:24 pm, 4-Jul-2012

Money talks!!! After all we did for Rvp... He shows us no love!! Yes he has been with us for 8 years but we stood by him when he was accused of rape and he has only ever been fit for a whole season once.... Now as soon as he is fit he wants to leave!!!! Has he learned nothing 8 out of ten players who leave us go on to do nothing!!! He should give us one more season... Just my option!!!

Joosep 11:22 pm, 4-Jul-2012

Screw these strikers, we already have Giroud as CF, who rarely has gotten injured so far in his career. And still have Chamakh, who can surely step it up with more game time, which i see him getting with RvP leaving. I doubt Giroud will rack up all the minutes RvP did

Paul Sully 11:46 pm, 4-Jul-2012

I'm 44yrs old & went to my first game against Norwich in a 1-1 draw when I was 7. But in the last 7yrs we have gone from bad to worse, and this is really starting to p**s me off. We lost David Dein of the board and since then what have we done, nothing. Our board have sold out to foreign ownership with the silent Kroenke and Usmanov not willing to work together, then Hill Wood putting his foot in it more and more. This sounds more like the cold war, east versus west!! Us supporters all we want is our great team to play beautiful football and win trophies, yet the board seem to want to make there wallets bigger then what? Wenger has he gone as far as he can with us, I think yes. His bad transfers, tactics has cost us our place in English football, I can't explain how I felt after we got smashed by the mancs last season, and I'm sure you all feel the same. It seems our only goal now is to finish above the scum, it was only a few years ago we were in the champions league final. So let's all get together and get on the boards back to splash the cash, get some top quality signings in and then start wining trophies again RVP is not the only top quality stricker out there. The next one will be Vermaelen to Barca then where does that leave us? If I'm wrong please tell me, but if you agree back me and all the other supporters who want to see us challenging for silverware again

Davelee 3:47 am, 5-Jul-2012

Fernado Torres, fits well to the Arsenal Game, maybe we should look to within the league. He did v. well in the Italy game( Final) cool, calm, collected pass to Mata..... Beautiful. That is an Arsene 's type player, Torres, has got the Gunner DNA structure, Team over Self.

douglas 2:51 pm, 7-Jul-2012
