Roy Hodgson Named As England Manager: Let's Embrace Being The Underdog Nation

After years of hating every player to don the shirt at international tournaments, let's get behind Woy and his squad and accept our status as underdogs. Who knows, we might even enjoy it...

Following the horror show of a performance in the 2010 world cup, the break down of the ‘Golden generation’ and the appointment of Roy Hodgson it is apparent that England are huge underdogs for Euro 2012.

I for one am glad of this; I think Hodgson is a good appointment. I have become disillusioned with international football in England over the last decade or so. I have grown tired of seeing us underperform on the main stage after hyping ourselves up as potential winners. We have a chance to start fresh now with a new team and new expectations.  Being the underdog nation could well suit us. The English hate winners and this is why as a nation we have been guilty of ruining our own chances on the big stage, the supporters, players, press and the politics of the FA are all guilty of the pre tournament overhype and post tournament slamming.

Unlike many I did actually agree with the term ‘Golden generation’, we had several world class players but the fact was and is that your best players don’t make your best team. If Gerrard and Lampard can’t play together then don’t play them together, or put in a holding man with them so if they both go forward we have an insurance policy. If Scholes is one of the best central midfielders of his generation then play him in central midfield not on the left side to accommodate others. We never adopted the 4 3 3 and the international possession game quick enough, as other nations evolved their football we stood completely still hoping the class in our media pressured players would shine through. Occasionally it did, Beckham would save our bacon every now and again, Rooney or Gerrard would drag us out of an abyss on their football guile alone but that’s not how it works. We had world class players that never complimented one another in a team, formation, managerial decisions and pressure are 3 of a million reasons why we didn’t achieve.

If we can’t keep the ball as well as others lets soak up pressure and scare them with our pace, we have nothing to lose

Having said all that being totally honest after seeing us crash out against Germany I looked at our team and struggled to find anybody likeable in the entire squad. The passion had gone as a supporter. I didn’t care if we lost because I could barely stand anyone who was wearing the shirt. They gave us the spanking we deserved; I hoped it would induce a radical change. The radical change hasn’t been so radical but after a steady albeit easy qualifying campaign for the Euros I am quietly looking forward to the competition with this slightly fresher approach to the tournament.

Hodgson is a good appointment because he suits our ambitions, we need to be realistic and we need to play to our strengths, the fact is we are no Spain or Germany but that doesn’t mean we can’t have a good tournament. I also think he will make big decisions that we perhaps won’t expect and I really hope he does. The squad needs a shake up, not because I dislike the majority of the players but because the majority of them haven’t performed on the international stage, what have they done? Many of the likely candidates for the squad will have contributed to a failure in qualification for the previous Euros and a poor world cup campaign. You don’t necessarily need to exclude these so called senior players from the squad but possibly the first team else its likely to be Déjà vu again.

I say spring a surprise or two; take the Ox, If we can’t keep the ball as well as others lets soak up pressure and scare them with our pace, we have nothing to lose.

For now we need to get behind Roy and his squad choice and accept that we are the underdog nation.

ha ha ha ha hope they get fucked every game

Underdogs can win the Euros, you only have to look at Greece in 04. In my view Hodgson is close personality wise to Bobby Robson, another underdog who was initially given no hope but took us to a semi final. That 1990 team was an amazing mix of personalities that thrived and bonded playing golf and cards in the Italian sun. They were a team on and off the pitch. Sadly I just can't see the current lot playing with any of the teamwork, passion or desire required to win as underdogs.

How can a nation with one of the richest leagues in the world be underdogs? Underachievers more like...

Kirby 8:04 pm, 1-May-2012

Mcclaren 2.0

I cry myself to sleep thinking about my nation's chances of qualifying for a major tournament.

Luke 9:03 pm, 1-May-2012

We can have one of the richest leagues in the world but that doesn't mean we are going to have a quality national team does it? If you underachieve at as many tournaments as we have(As i mentioned)then you are no longer considered contenders. I agree that there is a wiff of another Mcclaren scenario.

I would love our manager to stick his neck out and give us some exitement, with an almost compleete overhaul; Haart, Walker, Jones, Smalling, Cole, Parker, Rodwell, Lennon, A Johnson, Rooney and Walcott. They might not win the damn thing but at least they would provide some entertainment. I suspect with Roy it will be more of the tedious with; Haart, G Johnson, Terry, Cahill, Cole, Barry, Gerrard, Milner, Lampard, Crouch and Rooney. Get ready for anoter bore-fest with England at the Euros.

Frankly, it wouldn't matter if Jesus Christ himself coached England. English players, irrespective of how much our wonderfully sanctimonious media say otherwise are just not that good. We've had every manager touted by every pundit and commentator and we're still shit. We've had major international coaches, we've had English legends, we've had World class ex-players... And we're still shit. The only problem with Hodgson's appointment is that the print press wankers who write for a living will already have written their obituaries for when Roy is sacked, claiming Harry fucking Redknapp would have won us the World Cup.

i love cuse

Howard 7:12 am, 2-May-2012

I agree with Cuse to a point, but I don't think the players are shit, I think most of them are wankers with no team spirit. They love the name on the back of the shirt more than the one on the front.

yogavo 9:48 am, 2-May-2012

what i find laughable is that every new england managed will now have to "win the players over" WHAT?

Mr Controversial 12:52 am, 6-May-2012

Cuse,Harry Redknapp will win us the World Cup in 2014. Cheer up.

Gerrard doesn't have an football guile. He too often gives the ball away, too often tries 'Hollywood balls' and has far too many loose shots. That said he can play with Lampard if in a midfield three but not in a two. My biggest worry would be that Gerrard and Rooney can't play together because both want to occupy the same space. Rooney's best position in playing in the classic number 10/ second striker role, where he can get the ball and influence play. That is also Gerrard's favoured position ie playing behind Torres. So for me you either pick Gerrard or Rooney. Capello gave Rooney that role and then mistakenly tried to fit Gerrard in somewhere.
