Spurs Half-Term Report: Sell Gallas, Buy Llorente, Supplant Arsenal In The Top Four

Gallas' uselessness one of the few negatives in a quietly impressive start for Andre Villas-Boas as Tottenham Hotspur manager...

Tottenham Hotpur Half-Term Report: Get Parker Fit, Sell Gallas & AVB Can Guide Us To The Top Four

What’s going right?

The transition from Redknapp to Villas-Boas and the steadily silencing of the critics. The attacking football has been sublime at times and the signings all look to be finding their feet after shaky starts. It was a difficult summer full of negative press and doubt cast at our door, but we’re showing what we’re made of and Daniel Levy’s ambitions look close to being met.

What’s not?

The injury list influencing the season and my mood way more than it should be doing. It’s an easy excuse, but the likes of Younes Kaboul, Benoit Assou-Ekotto and Scott Parker have missed the majority of the season thus far, and we’ll be much stronger going in to the Christmas period should they regain fitness in the coming weeks.

Got the right manager?

Of course, I was virtually lobbying for Andre in the summer and I’m ecstatic that we actually got him. I’ve said this from the start, but he’s got to be given time from the fans and board alike, and backed just as wilfully. He’s the perfect man for the club, and he’s one or two top signings away from really proving the press-agenda against him wrong.

Star player?

There hasn’t really been one in my opinion, the ethos under AVB is that we play as a complete team, and a handful of players have taken it in turn to put in outstanding performances. Between them; Mousa Dembele, Jermain Defoe, Gareth Bale, Aaron Lennon, Hugo Lloris, Sandro, Jan Vertonghen, Steven Caulker and Tom Carroll have all been the players to impress the most.

Who would you like to sell in January?

William Gallas hopefully; he’s been a shadow of his former self this season and he’s been directly responsible for more goals than anybody else. Saying that, if we’re going to compete on every front like the manager seems to want us to, it might be an idea keeping him around as a squad player.

Who do you want to sign?

We need a player who can effectively cover both wings when either Lennon or Bale are missing, and a decent understudy at left-back wouldn’t go amiss either; neither Vertonghen nor Naughton seems entirely comfortable when having to play out there. The elusive ‘complete forward’ will be heavily rumoured; names like Llorente and Damiao are likely to raise their heads again. The Moutinho and Willian saga’s are likely to be rekindled too, although I wouldn’t say no to either.

Best chant so far?

Our chanting has come under threat of some laughable legal attack this season, so the defiant “we’re Tottenham Hotspur, we’ll sing what we want” has proven its point.  Candidly telling Man City fans that we’d seen their mothers on Shameless also raised a chuckle. In all honestly; I’m still a tad bitter my chant for Gylfi Sigurdsson to the tune of Sally Cinnamon by the Stone Roses hasn’t taken off, but if “whoop whoop, that’s the sound of the Lloris, whoop whoop another save from the beast” takes its place, I’ll be more than happy.

Best opposition player / team you’ve seen this season?

Juan Mata looked like he was on a completely different level when we played Chelsea at home earlier on this season, absolutely unplayable at times. That front four that Chelsea have acquired are wonderful to see when on song, Torres aside, either one of Hazard, Oscar or Mata has the ability to single-handedly turn a game on its head. Terrifying when effective.

Biggest c*nt of the season

The tabloid press have actually outdone themselves this season. The names of John Cross at The Mirror and Paul Jiggins of The Sun spring to mind. Cross famously tweeted that Levy was “UP THERE WITH THE VENKY’S” when he sacked his close media friend Harry Redknapp, and after AVB dicked him in a press conference after an inflammatory question regarding goalkeeper selection, Jiggins retaliated with a baseless hatchet job the following weekend along the lines of player mutiny within the club - to which they all immediately called nonsense. There’s a certain Peter Herbert too; but he can kiss my yid arse.

End of season prediction

It all honestly depends on how heavily we invest in January and the quality of those signings too; and hopefully injuries don’t resonate as heavily as they have done this early on in the season. The pipe dream would be Champions League football and a cup; but anything positive would be good enough for me this season. We capitulated  fairly spectacularly in the second half of last season, so anything less embarrassing than that would be nice. As always; I’d naturally swap that all in a second to finish above Arsenal.

If you like it, Pass it on

Ooh, poor Spurs and fans alike, keep dreaming! Your article sums up the mentality of your team, and the very reason why you will never finish above Arsenal! First, stop lamenting about Gallas, he's your man, isn't he? Arsenal denied him an extension to his contract and showed him the exit door as a consequence. So I would rightly baptize him the most suitable name, "Gallas The Reject"! Now, Spurs picked him from the bin and thought they had got gold! Sorry, you got it wrong, you never got gold, you got rubbish instead! No wonder you are now calling for his head! Second, You have to come to terms with the bitter fact that Arsenal and Spurs don't belong to the same world. If both clubs were going to the USA, Arsenal are already there while Spurs are still at Heathrow, yet to be cleared! Your target every season is to finish above Arsenal. This means that even if Arsenal finished 20th, Spurs would be happy to finish 19th so they can go to hell together! What a mentality! I remember in the unbeaten season, Spurs celebrated like they had won a trophy after Robbie Keane converted from the spot at the death draw 2-2! At the other end though, Arsenal were celebrating winning the league! That summed up the mentality of the two teams, didn't it? I should therefore rightly say that because Arsenal are what they are, they will always finish above Spurs because they are Arsenal!Their target every season is to win the league. If they fail, they finish in the top four and consider that a disappointment, because they don't give that first priority. Remember the 2005-06 season? Spurs had seemingly a better league season and were supposed to finish 4th, but because they are Spurs, they coiled their tails between their legs and disappeared in oblivion after losing to West Ham on the final day of the season to finish 5th! Poor Spurs, finishing above Arsenal is a dream that will never be realised!!!!!!!!!!!! Even now, despite their recent wobbles, Arsenal are tied on the same number of points as Spurs, who according to the writer have had a QUIETLY IMPRESSIVE SEASON so far, while to Arsenal, THIS IS THEIR WORST START TO A PREMIER LEAGUE SEASON, and no doubt by the turn of the season, the Lilly Whites will be languishing in the sixth or seventh, because that is where they belong!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

To Patrick. I can only say, I am happy that Spurs fans are not like Arse fans who take more delight in other fans "sorrows" (or should I say "that which they think should be their sorrows"). I have been a Spurs follower for 50 years and I do not recognize myself in anything of what you are writing. An advice: concentrate bon your own (mislabel?) life ansd keep off throwing negativity on others. I wish you all possible progress in your dealings with other people.

Parick You are a pathetic piece of c*nt. Why would you comment on a Spurs thread if not for your own insecurities? You'd be far more intelligent if you stuck to your own club sites instead of trolling. The writer has presented a lucid personal perspective view. You on the other hand......

Stil lost to bradford though haha. I joke! Look everyone has there own opinion and that's fine. Personnely I think this is the 1st time in Years that sours have a slighty better squad than arsenal. I don't really care if spurs finish above arsenal. Top 4 is fine with me. Sorry my English ain't great.

Adamski 12:15 pm, 23-Dec-2012

@Patrick - you are a LEGEND!!! HAHAHAHA. sorry spuds, this link appeared on an arsenal thread. It's sometimes pleasant to delve into the contorted and disillusioned minds of your rivals. Especially when they tend to hold optimism that exceeds historical fact. We are better you, now and for the near future at the very least. Kisses and hugs to you all xoxoxoxoxo

Patrick - Where do we begin. Gallas is at the ripe age of 35. His first season was a successful one for us, he proved instrumental in guiding us to the 1/4 final of the CL after proving outstanding in Milan and deserved an extension. He's now reach the age where his time has come. It also shows how, inadvertently, Arsenal's real aim is to finish above Spurs. Yes, remember the days of 05-06 when you were challenging the league. I don't think any club has experienced a fall such as yours. What was previously a formality finishing above Spurs is now an accomplishment. Congrats on the decline of your club and the growth of ours. Arsenal are never looking to win the league, that '4th place trophy' is what they set out for. You finished an almighty 1 point above us last year, barely USA is it? Had it not been from an abysmal performance from Fulop, you'd have finished a position lower. Every season for you will be 'the worst ever' if you continue to hold league title aspirations. If we were a 7th or 8th placed club then we'd have finished there in the last 3 seasons no? Now just return to your Wenger Hokey Cokey and focus on trying to finish above Spurs

John 1:24 pm, 23-Dec-2012

By that logic man city would have never won the league coz as we all know man U are historically better! No doubt in the past arseanal have had a stronger squad! More than Likly spurs or arseanal will not win a trophy this season. We are in the same points so let's see out the season and see what happens. Come on you spurs.

Cheshuntboy 3:58 pm, 23-Dec-2012

'Sublime football'? If you really believe that Spurs have been playing sublime football this season, you need help urgently (and it certainly explains why you're such a fan of AVB); I suggest you change your medication before it's too late.

Adamski's Carer 5:26 pm, 23-Dec-2012

Please accept my apologies for little Adamski's mistype. He meant to post "@Patrick - you are a BELLEND!!! but unfortunately the soft bit of his rusk fell onto the keyboard. Dribble and rusk really screw up the keyboard. Sorry to have to stand in for the tot but it's late for him and he's already gone night-nights! Bless....
