Sabotage Times, We can't Concentrate so Why Should You?Sabotage Times, We can't Concentrate so Why Should You?

It’s probably not going to be this guy, but one of the following could be the next Tottenham Hotspur  manager…

Harry hasn’t gone yet but he will, with the current chat suggesting he’s going to take over the England job at the end of the season. Assuming this is the case and he doesn’t leave before May here are four possible options for the top job at White Hart Line.

David Moyes

Availability

Will make it 10 years at Everton this March, but there is a feeling that he might be coming to an end of his time there with the club struggling too often for a man of his status.  Persistently linked with the Manchester United job whenever Fergie goes, though that is a while yet.  Must be looking to step up a level now.

On-Field Success

The term ‘works wonders’ was seemingly invented for the Premier League manager you would least like to get into a back-alley scrap with.  With a tight (read: non-existent) budget has kept Everton in the top eight in all but 2 of his nine seasons, as well as getting them to an FA Cup Final and to the qualifying rounds of the Champions League.

Off-Field Success

Has managed to keep Phil Jagielka and Marouana Felliani happy, and Arteta stayed at the club for far longer than was decent.  Bill Kenwright (quite rightly) never has a bad word to say about him.

What Would The Fans Think?

They’d be pleased, though there would be some concerns as to the style of football he plays (though, to be honest, he’s done the best with the resources available at Goodison).  Wouldn’t be quite the glamour signing we seek to take us into the land of dreams, then keeping expectations steady might not be such a bad thing.

Klinsmann can be considered the Grandfather (or at least the Great-Uncle) of the current German team

Jurgen Klinsmann

Availability

Currently less than a year into a contract with the US national team.  Has come out and said he is currently ‘very happy’ in his current role.

On- Field Success  (as a manger)

Klinsmann can be considered the Grandfather (or at least the Great-Uncle) of the current German team that is probably going to win the Euros this summer.  Surprisingly sacked by Bayern less than a year into the job, with them just 3 points off the top in the 2008-2009 season.  Results since taking over USA have been pretty average- played 9, won 4, drawn 1, lost 4.   Dedicated to attractive football.

Off-Field Success

Achieved the unimaginable in 2006 by concocting a team that made the average rational England fan admit to liking Germany. Renowned forward thinker, revolutionised methods behind the scenes at Germany and Bayern (though questions remain whether this was part of the reason for his removal at the latter).

What Would The Fans Think?

They’d be doing cartwheels down Edmonton High Street if he was announced.   Until recently, his season with us in 1994 was my favourite ever time as a Spurs fan; chasing his VW Beetle out of Chigwell training ground is the rosiest of rose-tinted memories.  Commitment to attacking football ensures he ticks all the boxes.

Brendan Rogers

Availability

Unknown as to whether he would be conducive to a move to Spurs.  Seems very content at Swansea though an approach would probably interest him.

On-Field Success

Had limited success (and time) at Watford and Reading but has taken Swansea to 11th place in the Premier League in less than 20 months, when everyone (myself included) predicted a dignified but definite return from whence they came.  Long way to go and we all know what happens to teams that come up from the Championship and continue playing pretty football, but look to be in better shape than most of the teams beneath them.

Off-Field Success

Lauded by everyone for their style of football.  Was youth team and reserve team manager at Chelsea under Jose Mourinho (he also worked with AVB) so has experience of  egos and methods at a higher level than he has managed at.

What Would The Fans Think?

A couple years ago they would have been delighted, but his relative lack of experience would be a concern.  Probably a bit too soon.

Jose Mourinho

Availability

Currently entrenched in the task of (probably) winning the title at Real and still has the second half of ther Champions League still to come, but has spoken openly of his desire to move back to England soon.   Tends to shift on from clubs once he’s left his mark, thus leaving an unsullied legacy.

On Field Success

You’ll need all the fingers on several hands to count them off  Multiple league titles with Porto, Chelsea and Inter.  Champions League with Porto and Inter.  10 points ahead in La Liga with Real.

Off Field Success

Channels the spirit of Henry V through the body of George Clooney.   The ultimate football psychologist; fosters us-against-them mentality that means players would quite happily hand over their wives to him if he said it would help the team.  Owners normally get the hump with him.  Loved by English press, tolerated by the Italian, disliked by the Spanish.

What Would The Fans Think?

They’d be worried about his fondness for pragmatic rather than attractive football, but his record and allure for top players would mean they’d forget all that very quickly.    It’s Jose Mourinho, for God’s sake.

Edmonton High Road--odd one that-- generally known as Fore Street by the locals. Tottenham High Road was previously and for a much longer time known as Tottenham Street. Both Fore Street and Tottenham Street form part of the Bishopsgate to Lincoln Roman highway known as Ermine Street and were possible pre Roman trackways included in the Roman Road. I prefer Mr Moyes.

yoyoy 6:44 pm, 14-Feb-2012

Don't think Rogers would be a good move. Would be satisfied with Moyes, pleased by Klinsmann and over the moon with Mourinho.

No mention of that bloke at Norwich who tactically outwitted Rodgers, just recently? Good. We want to keep him.

Mourihno doesn't go anywhere unless there's millions and millions to spend. P.S. Can we have Bale part exchange for EA?

Ian Griffiths 5:37 am, 15-Feb-2012

Moyes! Lol, boring... was this article written by an Arsenal fan?

Kev Kalagaroo 6:43 am, 15-Feb-2012

OK, curveball coming at you all. What about Wenger? He WILL leave Arsenal at the end of this year and yeah sure we hate him as we do all gooners but he is GOOD. He gets his boys playing attractive footy and would be re-invigourated by the opportunity to work with a progressive YOUNG squad. He seems to have gone a little stale at the Em, but I would stil rather AW than any of the others mentioned. Moyes suits the backs to the wall game and I honestly doubt that he could translate his style through to what is honestly a far superior and more technically gifted Spurs squad, but thanks for Saha anyway:-). Klinsman?? Not suited to the prem im my humble opinion as his style of coaching is far more sedentary than the cut and thrust there-in. As for the special one? hahahaha Dan the man doesn't have the wonga to tempt that self serving egotist to WHL, as good as he is I would pass on that.

Martin Baird 7:35 am, 15-Feb-2012

Well Mr Moyes for me is a no-no same as Klinsmann I think there should only be 2 candidates Brendan Rodgers and Jose Mourinho, Brendan would jump at the chance to manage Spurs and he plays attractive football and wouldn't cost us too much which would please Mr Levy, Mourinho is completely different he would take us straight to the top of the league and win cups but it would be at a hefty price and with a new stadium would we have the funds for him I doubt it but I think success would overshadow everything it's a tricky call for Levy. My personal choice would be Mourinho with the initial outlay of money he would generate alot more money over the years for the club and have the best players and win most games. You really thinl that Spurs fans would be thrilled at an appointmentof Klinsmann? Not for me. He has no experience of management in English football and that has to be a top priorty. I wouldn't want him.

davidhillier 12:41 pm, 15-Feb-2012

Thanks for setting me right Welbourne. Just realised I've been calling it Edmonton High Road since I was 5 without ever actually looking at the street sign. Smashing knowledge.

Boll Weevil 5:23 pm, 16-Feb-2012

I can't see Mourinho taking the job, not enough money for him to spend. Rodgers would not be a big enough appointment to keep Bale, Modric and VDV at The Lane. Moyes would be a safe pair of hands. Would love to see Klinsmann in charge, I don't buy this "will need premier league experience" rubbish.

Alan C 10:01 pm, 16-Feb-2012

I think Mourinho might fancy the challenge to be honest !! Taking Spurs that final step might excite him ? If levy promises some cash it may well happen ! David Moyes will probably be the next manager of Man U when the time comes

goughy 9:17 pm, 18-Feb-2012

on MR. Moyes, "a man of his status", what fucking status, shit player, shit tactician, makes more wrong signings than right ones but somehow manages to escape the press' attention. he single handedly ruined James Beattie, Andy Johnson, Yakubu, Diniyar Bilyaletdinov, all good players before and after Moyes' man management. and as for "ready to step up", who the fuck do you think you are? Two thirds of a decent season and you think your Man U. Give a head a massive wobble pal and wake up, your Arsenals baby sister and always will be

davidhillier 6:37 pm, 19-Feb-2012

Goughy- Eveton's net spend over the last decade has been that of a club fighting relegation not that of one challenging for Europe most seasons. Therefore he has earned the right to be considered a manager of status regardless of how a handful of players have not succeeded under him………...as for your jibes about our inferiority to Arsenal. I was not making any grand statements about us being in the same league as Man U. You are putting words into my mouth. Regardless of that, swapping a team that is (at best) scrapping to get into the Europa League for a team that is almost certainly going to get into the Champions League and is on the fringes of the title race would be considered a step-up by any rational football supporter.

goughy 9:17 pm, 23-Feb-2012

David,im an Evertonian myself, [believe it or not], followed them home and away for 30 years and have never witnessed a manager as negative and over-rated as David Moyes. Ive got hundreds of examples as to why a believe this to be true, but i'll only bore you with afew. Until the recent signing of Jelavic hes been frequently quoted in the press as wanting a striker, and, in his words, has done for a few seasons. He had £24 million at his disposal after selling Lescott, but instead of this striker he was desperate for he signed 2 centre halves[which we had more than enough of],and a Russian midfielder that he played out of position. He recently brought James Macfadden back to the club as, in his words again, midfield cover. A few first choice midfielders were out because of injuries, so he played 2 defenders in the centre of midfield, That game, we played a 6-4-0 formation, at home, against bottom 3 opposition with Macfadden on the bench, the perfect opportunity to use his midfield cover. I dont see the point in breaking the clubs transfer record on players that your not going to play in their best positions, even when he has the option not to. If Spurs dont win anything soon and a few key players get itchy feet, your back where youve been for the previous seasons, with us trying to get that Europa league spot. So, David, lets not consider Spurs a step up just yet, not at least until your an established champions league side. Oh, and i apologise for my initial foul rant, i was heavily refreshed.

goughy 10:28 am, 14-Mar-2012

David, dont suppose you watched the Merseyside derby last night? Six changes from a side on a nine match unbeaten run, none of them forced changes, just silly ones. The most tactically inept manager in the league. If he decides to take the Spurs job, i,ll pay for his taxi or give him a fucking lift there myself.
