If you’ve worn out SS12’s catwalk trends already, are sick of wearing the same as everyone else and stuck for inspiration this summer why not subvert the norm and step out in some neo-vintage designs from the golden era of style. Brilliant British 50s replica brands are everywhere and provide the key garments and accessories for a flirty, feminine look this season. From espadrilles, jellies, and rompers for the day to pillbox hats and petticoats for the evenings, the decade has all occasions covered.
Day dress experts and ethical enthusiasts Tara Starlet create beautiful garments with delightful attention to detail including scalloped contrast seams and daisy buttons. Flattering V necklines, classic A line skirts, fitted waists and flattering cap sleeves which cover half the top arm – the dresses are unbeatable. The Classic Starlet dress in polka-dot navy is my favourite. Just slick on a striking red pout and watch the working men whistle.
For occasion and evening wear head to 20th Century Foxy’s website. Their expanding range includes darling pieces like their Ruby Tuesday or Blue Heaven circle dress, exotic hair flowers, coloured chiffon headscarves, dainty crochet gloves and seamed tights for that stocking look without the hassle of suspender belts. Their own stock is all ethically made in the UK for optimum quality. I’d pair the Blue Heaven dress with a turquoise petticoat for a perfect wedding guest outfit.
What Katie Did, whose boutique is based in Portobello Green, London, have brought out gorgeous bikinis and swimsuits for SS12 that are just made for bombshells – sexy, shape enhancing, while flatteringly covering enough modesty for those reluctant to diet for the beach. The new bikini for this season in red is my favourite. The top is built for large and small chested ladies alike, with full coverage and good support. The bottoms enhance an hourglass shape and help create one for the more athletic of us with an inverted V pattern. It comes in powder baby blue, claret red and black, though only the red is currently available online.
An easy and striking retro summer hairstyle is victory rolls. Hot roll all your hair if possible. If not, the style is still doable. A volumising root hold product like label.m’s Reurrection Style Dust is useful if you have it; aside from that you’ll need lots of hairspray. Part your hair as usual and take the front section from the back of your ear up to your parting – a strip of hair about two inches wide. Brush it through so it’s smooth, sprinkle root hold product at the root if available, then back brush the back from the mid-section to the root quite thoroughly. Roll the hair upwards and backwards from the ends to your roots up to about two inches from your parting. Pin with kerby grips so you have a clean roll at the base of the head. Brush the front lightly so it looks smooth, voluminous and even, no hair out of place, then hairspray generously. Do the same on the other side so all the front section of your hair is in the two rolls on either side of your head. The rest of your hair is up to you. I tend to like to curl it, brush it through, smooth and spray it – for that real vintage look!
