Eminem's hip hop return, an ace dog companion and a stack load of maps, tweaks and improvements to the life ruiningly good online multiplayer. Here's what we learned from COD's live stream last night...

Come November we’ll be treated to the next instalment in the COD series. One set in the future after a catastrophic event has revoked USA’s title as superpower. Ten years after that event, a collection of different branches of the American armed forces have bound together to form the “Ghosts”.

Not much has been released about the single player portion of the game, however I doubt it’ll live up to the emotional journey that Modern Warfare offered other its series. RIP Soap.

Though in fairness, it’s all about the multiplayer these days, and yesterday the internet was treated to a glimpse of that world.

Multiplayer FPS has become a more competitive market, with Battlefield taking the lead in the hardcore audience, but now Ghost seems to putting up a fight for that title. Adding new interactions between player and environment, the game is set to give the player a more fluid experience. For instance, players will now be able to lean on walls, and sliding, so the players can finally act like the AI models.

First up, players will be able to form squads. To create a group of up to ten soldiers, all with their own load out and appearance. The soldiers will work as your team mates in the new mode, aptly named, Squads. Your AI teammates will behaviour differently depending upon the load out, and will gain XP. This seems like an interesting RPG element to add to COD, and will definitely create an individual experience for the player.

Call Of Duty: Ghosts Reveal With New Eminem Track Survival Call

Also announced were the typical kill-steaks, around twenty were announced, including the attack dog that set the internet on fire a few months ago. Within the kill streak announcements were details about how other actions will increase your skill (similar to Black Ops 2), gone are the death streaks (good!), and with fair fewer air-based ones. I am surprised they didn’t do away with them totally, especially since Battlefield does so well without this, sometimes, game changing abilities.

Hidden within the run down for the new perk system was the announcement that players will be finally able to play as female soldiers. The perk system itself hasn’t changed, the new skin is just a case of genders equality in the battlefield. Though I suppose it should be noted that Ghosts ones host the largest number of perk so expect more useless ones… here’s looking at you blast shield.

Finally, three new game modes/maps were announced. Cranked, reminds me of the film of the same named (here’s hoping Jason Statham is the announcer). In essence, whenever the player kills another player, they gain a state boost. However, the player now has a time limit to gain another kill if the player fails, they blow up! An interesting twist on the King of the Hill game mode that might be fun for short bursts, but I can see it easily becoming annoying after a few rounds of blowing up constantly.

The other new game mode is Search and Rescue. A fairly simple game mode, one I’m fairly uncertain if I should call new at all. In this game mode, players can be revived if an ally picks up their dog tags, and they’ll die if the enemy does… Seems like the same old thing to me.

And finally, Free Fall. At present this map will only be available to those that pre-order via GameStop (damn you!), and the game takes place on a persistent map, where over time the skyscraper the game occupies crumbles around them. Reminds me of Black Ops 2 zombie map, High Rises.

All in all, the new game mechanics interest me. Greater customisation, and interaction are bound to improve game play. But so far the rest seems like the same old same old. Though, this is the COD series after all. Now much has changed since Modern Warfare, so expect this one to break gaming records again, you’ll be sure to see me queuing for a copy on release night.
