Adam Lallana is a player almost certain to be on the move this summer, with both Liverpool and Tottenham heavily linked to the Southampton captain. The fee, however, could actually be putting both clubs off, with alternatives already being sounded out.
However, the reason they both want Lallana is because he has a lot going for him. Able to play effectively from either flank in a front three, or as a more traditional number ten in a free role, he can impact a game effectively from almost anywhere in the final third.
He defends well, having been taught to effectively press by new Tottenham head coach Mauricio Pochettino, and might like the sound of rejoining the boss that got the best football of his career out of him. Liverpool though can offer Champions League football and almost certainly higher wages, as well as the chance to move and settle alongside Rickie Lambert, who has already moved from Southampton to Merseyside.
£25m is a lot of money to spend on anybody, but both clubs have shown in recent years the ability to stump up the large fees when they want to land a particular player. Lallana will fit in well at either club, so it looks like the choice might end up being his when the inevitable bids are accepted by Southampton. If you’re a betting person though, you’d be silly not to expect him to still be playing in red next season.
See him, more likely than not, starting out wide for England tonight against Italy [11pm BBC].
