Celtic and Sunderland are reported to be eyeing each other’s players, with Virgil van Dijk tipped for a move to the Premier League and Steven Fletcher rumoured to be heading back to Scotland.

Van Dijk has long been linked with a transfer to England and now Sunderland have emerged as favourites, with the former Rangers manager Dick Advocaat been given a £50m budget to improve the Black Cats’ fortunes. Here’s what Sunderland fans can expect if the silky Dutch defender moves south.

Meanwhile, Celtic are said to want to sign the Scottish international striker Steven Fletcher who would be available for around £2m. After a bright start at Sunderland the 28-year old’s form has dipped over the past two seasons and they now look set to cash out on a player that they paid £12m for.

A new start could be just what the former Hibs star needs at this stage of his career. Here’s Fletcher in top form from his debut season at Sunderland.

While a straight swap deal looks unlikely - Van Dijk’s valuation will be in excess of Fletcher’s - it seems likely that the two clubs will meet at the negotiating table soon.
