Arsenal And Liverpool Go Head To Head For French Midfield Enforcer

AS Monaco's defensive midfielder Geoffrey Kondogbia has attracted a lot of attention this season after playing a crucial role in Monaco's Champions League run. The 22-year-old was probably Monaco's most important player in their tie against Arsenal, displaying impressive physicality and intelligent positioning. Now, according to today's print edition of French paper L'Equipe, the Gunners, along with Liverpool, are keen on signing the Frenchman.

Both Arsenal and Liverpool are keen on recruiting a defensive midfielder and Kondogbia fits the bill perfectly. Even though Arsenal have unearthed a gem in Francis Coquelin, it's thought that with Arteta and Flamini ageing, they want another body in that position and, in fact, Kondogbia is actually younger than 'Le Coq'. Liverpool, meanwhile, are looking to replace Steven Gerrard and Lucas Leiva and see Kondogbia as a quality option.

Kondogbia moved from Sevilla to Monaco in 2013 for roughly £15m and is now thought to be valued at £20m. Both Arsenal and Liverpool can afford to buy the Frenchman, but Arsenal will have the advantage if Liverpool fail to qualify for Champions League football (not too mention the Wenger French connection).
