Celtic are set to miss out on Real Madrid star Martin Odegaard (Express), after they attempted to sign the attacking midfielder on loan.

Celtic boss Ronny Deila tried to sign his Norwegian compatriot on loan after the 16 year old was surplus to requirements in the Madrid first team this season, but it appears he will be staying in Spain as Rayo Vallecano look to tie up a loan deal until January.

Deila retains an interest in signing him on loan in the future but at the present time they are resigned to defeat. Odegaard made his Real debut in May, coming on as a substitute for Cristiano Ronaldo for the final 30 minutes in a 7-3 win over Getafe.

There is good news for the Bhoys as they are expected to seal a new contract for Nir Bitton, as the Israeli international's current contract expires in 2017 and are keen to tie him to a long term deal on improved terms.
