Fernando: Man United Likely To Beat Liverpool To Signing Porto Destroyer
On a day full of Man United news, looks like Liverpool might not get their chance to make their mark on the window just yet, as Nick Miller's Telegraph round-up reports that the Mancs are close to signing Portuguese anti-regista Fernando from Porto.
Might be a shame for The Octopus both for the fact that Juan Mata has just snaffled up the number 8 shirt and that, to most United fans, 'Fernando' is just where Januzaj takes his dates, but the player is really something. A gangly, mountain of a man - should it be possible for monumental stone structures to gangle - the Brazilian-born midfielder looks like he might feature in Portugal's World Cup squad, following in Deco's steps and turning his back on Brazil. Brave move, mate.
He would be a fantastic addition to any squad but possibly to Manchester United's a bit more: I get the feeling he doesn't posses quite the level of agility or technique that Rodgers would want from a defensive-midfielder but he's got just the right amount of quality and bite to snap both Moyes' side out of its stasis and the shins of onrushing attackers. A 'double-whammy', in industry parlance.
