Wayne Rooney had a goal disallowed early on, and Man United hit the post as they couldn't find a cutting edge at home to Newcastle United. The Man of the Match award went to Newcastle centre back Fabricio Collocini, which tells the story of the game.

The positive side for Van Gaal is that it is the third clean sheet they have kept in their opening three Premier League games. But the negative side is that they've only scored twice, and one of those was an own goal, with Wayne Rooney going nine games without scoring. The downside of these performances early in the season is that the level of investment at United is so high (£250 million since Van Gaal became manager) that a certain level of expectation comes with that, and perhaps the playing style doesn't excite like so many of Sir Alex Ferguson's sides did.
