According to ESPN, Liverpool are set to make a bid for their first big money player since cashing in on Sterling, with Aston Villa's Christian Benteke top of the list.

Benteke has long been a target for Brendan Rodgers, who knows he must firm up his attacking options if Liverpool are to enjoy European football and challenge for the title once again.

Brazilian forward Roberto Firmino has already made a move to Anfield this summer, but with Balotelli likely to jump ship Rodgers needs an extra man up front, and the solid goal machine Benteke fits the bill perfectly.

Spurs were competing for the Belgian's signature, but after Villa valued him at over the £30m mark, the Londoners decided to look for a cheaper alternative.

Not all Liverpool fans are overjoyed with the news however. Here's what's been happening on Twitter.
