Man City's John Guidetti to Leicester & 10 More Championship Loan Targets
Every year the Championship benefits from a clutch of Premier League youngsters willing to take the step down to a lower level in search of first team football. Here's ten your club should sign...
1. Josh McEachren
Position: Centre Mid
Current Club: Chelsea
Suggested Club: Wigan
Mceachren seems to have been around for ever, but he’s still only 20. Spent all of last year at Middlesborough, where he was a consistent member of their first team. He’s already been linked with a move to La Liga’s Real Sociedad however, so any Championship club looking at Mceachren would probably have to convince him of their ambition.
2. Saido Berahino
Current Club: West Brom
Suggested Club: Middlesbrough
Baggies striker Berahino has seemingly appeared from nowhere, but his winning goal for England U21s against Moldova - combined with a hattrick for his club in the league cup – suggest that Berahino might be one to watch. Certainly worth a punt for a championship team short on firepower.
3. Jordan Ibe
Current Club: Liverpool
Suggested Club: Leeds United
The latest exciting talent to come out of Liverpool’s academy, Ibe combines pace with impressive technical attributes. At 17 he’s still pretty raw, but already has lower league experience playing for Wycombe Wanderers.
4. Serge Gnabry
Position: Attacking Mid
Current Club: Arsenal
Suggested Club: Bolton
The closest thing on this list to a surefire bet, you really know what you’re getting with an attacking midfielder from the Arsenal youth academy. Gnabry is no exception; technically impressive, strong for his age, and knows that he’ll have a chance in the first team if he performs well.
5. Ryo Miyaichi
Suggested Club: Ipswich
Signed amid much fanfare a couple of years ago, Miyaichi has thus far failed to establish himself on loan at either Bolton or Wigan. A step down to the championship would probably do wonders for his confidence, and it seems unlikely he’ll be given his chance in the first team this year.
6. John Guidetti
Current Club: Man City
Suggested Club: Leicester City
Manchester City’s Swedish youngster is in the unfortunate position of being a great young striker competing with the likes of Aguero Dzeko and Jovetic for his place in the first team. It’s not an exaggeration to say that Guidetti would be a brilliant signing for any Championship club, and indeed most Premier League clubs. In his last loan stint at Feyenoord he scored an incredible 20 goals in 23 games.
7. Guillermo Varela
Position: Full Back
Club: Man Utd
Suggested Club: Watford
Most recently at Uruguayan club Penarol – where he made his debut age 18 - Varela shone at this summer’s South American Youth Championship, impressing David Moyes enough to seal a transfer to Man United for a rumoured £3 million. May take a while to adjust to the pace of the English game but would still be a valuable asset to a team chasing promotion.
8. Adnan Januzaj
Position: Attacking Mid
Current Club: Man Utd
Suggested Club: Reading
An exciting Man United youngster with creativity in abundance and a real eye for a pass. Januzaj has probably already been lazily compared to one of Beckham, Giggs and Scholes, but he reminds me of a young David Silva.
9. Zeki Fryers
Fryers (right) playing for Man United
Position: Centre back/Full Back
Suggested Club: Brighton, Blackburn
Fryers was the centre of controversy last year when he moved from Standard Liege to Tottenham last January, having only left Manchester United a few months earlier. A promising player, but will need to improve the physical side of his game to compete in the championship.
10. Samed Yesil
Suggested Club: Blackpool
Aged 17, he impressed enough to be given a chance in Bayer Leverkusen’s first team, but since then has found his chances limited at Liverpool. Needs a fresh start at a new club to fulfil his undoubted promise.
11. Charalampos Mavrias
Current Club: Sunderland
Suggested Club: Nottingham Forest
Not normally a club famed for developing strong young players, Mavrias is an exceptional prospect for the North East club, having accumulated 51 appearances for Panathanaikos before his 19th birthday. Mavrias may nonetheless find himself sidelined at Sunderland, and a loan move elsewhere could help his development.
