Manchester United are planning to hijack Chelsea's bid for Everton defender John Stones, according to ESPNFC.

Chelsea have had two bids for Stones rejected by Everton, but are still keen on signing the 21-year-old. It's thought that the next bid will be in the region of £30m.

However, Chelsea are no longer alone in the race for one of England's most promising centre-backs. United are hopeful that a player plus cash deal can give them the edge over the champions. It's reported that United will include Northern Irish defender Johnny Evans in their bid, thus giving Everton a ready-made replacement as well as a hefty sum of cash.

United may well be coming in at the perfect time as Roberto Martinez has just criticised Chelsea's John Terry for 'illegally' tapping up Stones. It's understood that Everton are growing increasingly disgruntled with Chelsea's manner of business.

Another point to take into consideration is that United can offer Stones something Chelsea can't: first team game time from the off. Louis van Gaal needs fresh blood in the centre if his defence and Stones, in line with United's philosophy, could be the new young, English talisman who grows with the club. The player's head may well be turned...
